Informal Diagnostic Reading Inventory

Objectives: to foster awareness of the Ministrys Informal Diagnostic Reading Inventory (IDRI) To provide an opportunity for familiarization with the materials and procedures involved in administering the inventory To provide practice in the use of the inventory

Overview
Common inventory needed to diagnose students reading levels. Inventory was initially used to diagnose Grade 7 students who scored 33% AND BELOW Language Arts on the Grade Six Achievement Test (2010). 79 schools were targeted. Developed to determine students reading levels from Pre-primer to Grade 9

Testing Instructions
Begin with the Alphabet Knowledge (especially grades 1-3 or with students for whom you have no previous record) Next go to the screening tests which will determine the level to start with the word recognition/word list. Students performance on the word list/s will determine which passage to start with for oral reading and comprehension

Word Lists
The word lists consist of 10 words at the Pre-Primer and Primer 15 words at Grades 1-3 20 words at Grades 4-9 Criterion for passing each level is indicated on the record sheet.

Establishing The Students Overall Reading Level


Students overall reading level is determined by the highest level at which he or she does not exceed the number of errors permitted for oral reading or fall below the indicated level of success for comprehension.
