M105.93 to 94

Recap
In the previous class we have discussed about Classification of special castings. Hot chamber die casting where a furnace to melt metal is incorporated. Plunger is also used to force the molten metal in to die cavity. Cold chamber die casting where the metal is melted out side the chamber. Permanent mould casting where the molten metal flows due to gravity
M105.93 to 94 2

Objectives
On the completion of this period , you would be able to know about: Centrifugal Casting: True Centrifugal casting Semi- Centrifugal casting Centrifuging
M105.93 to 94 3

Centrifugal Casting
Casting is produced in a rotating mould . Molten metal poured in rotating mould. Mould rotates at a speed of 1500 r.p.m . Centrifugal force is created due to rotation.

M105.93 to 94

Centrifugal Casting
Molten metal spreads uniformly on the moulds . When it solidifies the casting is removed. Impurities are pushed towards centre of axis. Suitable for cylindrical hollow products

M105.93 to 94

Advantages
Suitable for all casting metals & alloys. Used for large castings. Fly wheels & hollow cylindrical castings. Good mechanical properties of the products

M105.93 to 94

Disadvantages
Not suitable for intricate castings. High manufacturing cost.

M105.93 to 94

Types of Centrifugal Castings

True centrifugal casting. Semi Centrifugal casting. Centrifuging.

M105.93 to 94

True Centrifugal Casting

Principle: Molten metal is poured into revolving mould. Molten metal spreads towards outer periphery mould This occurs due to centrifugal force. After solidification casting is removed.

De Lavaund Method
The true centrifugal machine consists of 1. Spinning mould 2. Pouring through 3. Laddle 4. Driving motor 5. Sand core

M105.93 to 94 12

De Lavaund method
This method consists of thin walled mould rotating about its axis. The mould is rotated by driving motor. Laddle is used to pour the molten metal. Molten metal is poured into rotating mould by means of trough. Due to centrifugal force , the molten metal passes to outer periphery of mould. Contd

De Lavaund Method
After solidification Casting is removed. No Core is required. Cast Iron pipes produced. 300mm diameter and 6m long pipes are produced

Semi Centrifugal Casting

Symmetrical castings like wheels are produced. Mould is rotated at speed of 350 r.p.m. Molten metal is fed through central sprue. It spreads outwards due centrifugal force. Dry sand core is used for getting central hole.

Centrifuging
The rotating mould consists of a no. of small moulds Molten metal is poured through central sprue. The molten metal is forced due to centrifugal force. Dense castings are obtained. Intricate castings can be produced
