Thesis Statement
The utilization of the wasste shell of Scylla serrata (Mud Crab) Shell as Chicken Feed Additive

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Raising animals, particularly chickens, is a hard task to do. You have to be aware of its shelter, temperature, water, food and a lot more. It is less expensive compared to pork and beef. Since humans are used to eating chickens, this will lead to a big problem all around the world if ever there is a shortage of chickens. Scylla serrata are widely popular in The Philippines. It is commonly served in seafood restaurants as a viand. Its shell is not edible or cooked in restaurants, so it is just thrown away and it adds to our problems in disposing garbage. The researchers have thought of a way to increase the nutrients of chicken feed by using the shell of the Scylla serrata. Instead of being a waste and a problem, it may even help us a lot more than we know. The Scylla serrata shell contains carbohydrates which will help in the growth of chickens.

Significance of the Study

As the production of corn and oats decreases due to crop shortages and natural disasters such as droughts, the right amount of nutrients to be fed on farm chickens is not met. The researchers found a way to stop the problem by using an alternative feed additive to be mixed together with the formulated chicken feed. The orange mud crab shell already contains three of the most important nutrients that are found among the three said main feed. By replacing crushed corn, oats and oyster shell, the chicken feed will be much easier to make and will cost lesser.

Scope and Limitation

The researchers will focus on the effectiveness of waste Scylla serrata shells as chicken feed additive in increasing the nutrients (calcium, protein, calories) found on the researchers formulated chicken feed. The researchers will make use of the Gallus gallus domesticus or the common domesticated chicken of approximately the same weight and height and the same gender. Upon testing and confirmation of the results, the researchers will go to the Department of Science and Technology to analyze the results (weigh, belly circumference, firmness of the stool, physical activity). The water intake may affect such results so the researchers will control the rations of water. Other effects beside the given will not be recorded or interpreted.

Review of Related Literature

Experiments in Chick Care This states that feeding chicks with the mixed ingredients that were showed there will make the chicks grow easier. When you consider that chickens are most often kept for meat and egg production, you realize you are also consuming the questionable ingredients of the commercial mash, especially in winter when the chickens foraging for fresh food is limited.

How to Make Your Own Chicken or Poultry Feed This states how will you make your own poultry feed for your chickens. This will also help you choose the right kinds of food for your chicks. This is the most natural diet chickens can eat. As long as they have enough acreage or consistently fresh pasture chickens can selfregulate and find enough insects, bugs, weeds, grasses and seeds to stay healthy. However, if you live in a place where winter comes and the grass stops growing, you'll need to give them feed at least through the cold. And it's a good idea to have supplemental feed for them even if they are primarily foraging.
