They are classified into three types: 1. Superior radioulnar joint 2. Middle radioulnar joint 3. Inferior radioulnar joint

Type - Pivot type of synovial joint

Middle Radio Ulnar joint is formed my the interosseous membrane which connects the radius and ulna. The fibers run downwards from radius to ulna The direction of Oblique cord is opposite to that of interosseous membrane.

Middle radio ulnar joint has 4 surfaces: Superior surface Inferior surface Anterior surfaces Posterior surface

1.

Functions of interosseous membrane:

It binds the radius ulna to each other It provides attachments to many muscles It transmits forces applied to the radius to the ulna. Radius is the important bone in wrist joint and ulna is the main bone in elbow joint

Its a pivot type of synovial joint

There are two movements they are supination and pronation

Its a rotatory movement in the forearm around the vertical axis . In semi flexed elbow the palm is turned upwards is called as supination This movement takes place in both inferior and superior radioulnar joint The vertical axis moves forwards and medially during supination As a result of this movement the axis is displaced medially

Supination is more powerful than pronation due to its antigravity movement It is responsible for all screwing movment E.g. tightening nuts and bolds It is brought about by supinator and biceps brachii.

Its a rotatory movement in the forearm around the vertical axis In semi flexed elbow the palm is turned downwards is called as pronation The vertical axis moves backwards and laterally during pronation As a result of this movement the axis is displaced laterally It is brought about by pronator quadratus and pronator teres

Tennis elbow: Abrupt pronation with full extended elbow and lead to pain and tenderness over the lateral epicondyle Cause: Sprain of radial collateral ligament Tearing of fibers of extensor carpi radialis brevis

Students elbow or miners elbow: It is characterized by effusion into the bursa into the subcutaneous posterior surface of olecranon E.g. students in lecture support their head for sleeping with their hands with flexed elbows Golfers elbow: It is micro trauma of medial epicondyle of humerus If the carrying angle is more(normal 13 degree) cubitus valgus ulnar nerve may get stretched leading to the weakness of intrinsic muscles
