Nature of Welfare
Welfare means fairing or doing well. It is a comprehensive term, and refers to the physical, mental, moral and emotional well being of an individual. Labour welfare, also referred to as betterment work for employees, relates to taking care of the well being of workers by employers, trade unions and govt. & non govt. agencies. Labour welfare has two aspects: Negative: Counteracting the baneful effects of the large-scale industrial system of production. Positive: Provision of opportunities for the worker and his/her family for a good life.

Intra-mural Facilities
Intra-mural activities consist of facilities provided within the factories and include medical facilities, compensation for accidents, provision of crches & canteens, supply of drinking water, washing and bathing facilities, provision of safety measures, activities relating to improving conditions of employment.
Extra-mural Facilities
They cover the services & facilities provided outside the factory such as housing accommodation, indoor & outdoor recreational facilities, amusement and sports, educational facilities for adults & children.
Welfare Activities by Government Laws made by govt. of India for welfare of employers, like:Factories Act-1948, the Mining Act-1952, the Plantation Labour Act-1951 etc., some welfare funds constituted for the benefit of the employees.
Welfare Activities by the Trade unions Labour unions have contributed their share for the betterment of the employees. Ex:- Textile Association of Ahmedabad & The Railwaymens Union. Some welfare activities of Textile Labour Association: 25 cultural & social centers. Schools for workers children. Dispensaries and maternity homes. Co-operative bank. Training programmes. A bi-weekly, the Mazdoor Sandesh.
Welfare work by Voluntary Agencies Many voluntary social-service have been doing useful labour-welfare work. Ex: Bombay social service league, the seva sadan society, the maternity. They cover night schools, libraries & lectures, promotion of public health.
