Evaluation question 2

By Sanjidha Baksh

2). How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks
In order to promote our documentary we had to create a radio trailer and double page spread. By doing this, it will create more exposure to our documentary as it is advertised visually alongside on our chosen radio station. As mentioned, our target audience was teenagers/young adults. It is applicable to both males and females as bullying occurs regardless of gender. Furthermore it is aimed at all social classes. Demographically, we can begin to look at age. As I have mentioned, our target audience, is teenagers/young adults. Stereotypically, this particular social group would have little or no interest in a lot of text, so we kept things minimal when it came to text. Even though our target audience was teenagers, we anticipate that it will attract other age groups to, as it does provide a brief insight into bullying. With regards to gender, there should be no problem as to whether it is more masculine or feminine. As we have included viewpoints of both genders and talked to both male and female experts. We also incorporated members from different ethnicities to avoid the stigmas of ethnocentricity. So it is aimed at a multi-cultural society. Psychographic attributes are also a key factor to take into account while doing products of this sort. It is important to understand their traits and viewpoints in certain areas. Although this would be of greater importance when it came to selling products, I believe that this also important while filming a documentary and constructing ancillary tasks. The type of people that would be attracted to our documentary would be those who have been bullied or those that are left out of a group of friends. Our documentary shows that you can overcome bullying with the help of student development teams or the college itself, so you are not alone!

2). How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks
So, we have our documentary, but alongside this, our first ancillary task that I shall discuss will be our radio trailer. A 35 second clip that informed listeners of what was to come. The majority of the sound used in the trailer was taken from the documentary itself. In order to do this, firstly we created a new sequence on final cut express. We dragged our first clip and positioned it on the timeline. We then had to delete the visual with the audio remaining. This was done because the video was of no use, whereas the sound was. To do this, we had to unlink them both leaving the sound. We did this to all the clips that we needed. Then, we transferred all the sound to garage band where we finalised all the effects and the sequencing. By using sound from the documentary effectively combines our main product and ancillary task. This is because is shows that they are both of relation with each other. I believe that our trailer was interesting and different to those that were in our media group. It was fast paced, edgy and quirky. This unique nature would help an audience remember our trailer.

Illustrates the trailer, alongside the sequencing and order.

2). How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks
The Vox Pops we used, were of teenagers/young adults. This was so that the audience were able to relate to those within their age group. Also, they could instantly realise that this trailer is aimed at them. In addition to this, the effects added were used to appeal to a younger audience. Also, they can hear how people feel towards bullying, and their attitudes towards it. With these clips used, the audience could relate to bullying or know of somebody that had been bullied. We also added the voice of an authorative figure who can act as a person to turn to, if bullying occurs. Lastly, there is a voice clip of myself, where I act as a narrator, and inform people of the date, time and what channel the documentary will be on.

2). How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks
The double page article, was our last ancillary task. The photograph that we have used will create an impact upon anybody. The fact that Rebecca has hidden her face shows how victims are in fear of exposure. Furthermore, the Stop Bullying written in Red Lipstick, which ironically looks like blood will also cause the reader to sympathize with the effects of bullying.
The colour scheme used is effective and directive and illustrates how this is a dark and gloomy topic. But, with many articles that are promoting their documentary, theres always an image directly from the documentary itself. However we decided against this as we believed that to have a different image would create more of an impact upon the reader rather than a still of a vox pop or the presenter itself. The magazine we chose was TV Choice. This was perfect as it targeted the audience that we were aiming at and also has a high circulation figures of 1,277,850. Also, it isnt expensive to buy, so many members of the public would purchase this regardless of gender, age or ethnicity.
