LENSES

By: Niken Puspita Sari

Why can we use magnifying glass to identify small object?

Learning

Objectives

Student should be able to: a. describe the definition of the lens b. distinguish convex and concave lenses. c. describe and draw the rays diagrams of convex and concave lenses. d. describe the process and paint formation and properties of the image on the convex and concave lenses. e. compare the experiment result.

Lens??
A lens is a transparent object limited by two refractions planes, with one of or both surface are curved.

In daily life, you may have come across lenses that are thicker or thinner in the middle.
Which of the following items do you think may contain lenses? Eyeglasses. Camera.

Magnifying glasses.

Watch.

When you see through lenses, do the objects appear the same as they are?

No !

CONVEX LENS

LENS
CONCAVE LENS

Convex lenses
Convex lens - thicker at the centre than at the edge.

Kind of convex lenses

biconvex

Plane-convex

Concave convex

The characteristics of convex lenses

a. Gathering rays (positive lens)

The characteristics of convex lenses

b. Convex lens has two focal points Parts of convex lens

Rays Diagram of Convex Lens

The incident ray parallel to the major axis, is refracted to the firing point (focal point)

The incident ray passing through the firing point is refracted to the major axis

The incident ray passing through the lenss optical central point is forwarded straight without any refraction

Concave lenses
Concave lens - thinner at the centre than at the edge.

Kind of Concave Lenses

Biconcave

Plane-concave

Convex concave

The characteristics of concave lenses

a. Spreading or emitting the rays (Negative lens)

b. Convex lens has two focal points

Rays Diagram of Concave Lens

The incident ray parallel to the major axis is refracted is it derives from the firing point (focal point)

The incident ray coming as if it goes to the firing point is refracted parallel to the major axis

The incident ray coming to the lenss optical central point is forwarded straight without any refraction

Conclusions
CONVEX LENS
Convex lens has characteristic of gathering rays (convergent) and it is called positive lens. The image formed depends on the position of the object located in front of the lens, either in quadrants I, II, or III

Conclusions
CONCAVE LENS

Concave lens has characteristic of spreading or emitting the rays (divergent) and it is called negative lens. The image formed in concave lens is only a kind, which is from the object randomly situated in front of the concave lens. The characterictics of image formed: virtual, upright, belittled, situated in quadrant I and in the same part.
