Background of the Study

The Department of Health has recently issued a list of its approved Medicinal Plants that can be used to treat common ailments like cough, pain in different body parts, skin problems, diarrhea and other uncomplicated illnesses. Along with its campaign to utilize medicinal plants before synthetic medicines, Filipinos are encouraged to do further scientific research about the benefits of using these herbal plants in attaining side effects free medicines and supplements.

Background of the Study

The medicinal plants approved by the Deparatment of Health which are registered in the National Drug Formulary were as follows : Lagundi (Vitex negundo L.), Yerba Buena (Clinopodium douglasii), Sambong (Blumea balsamifera L. DC), Tsaang Gubat (Carmona retusa (Vahl) Masam.), Niyog- Niyogan (Quisqualis Indica L.), Akapulko (Cassia alata L.), Ulasimang-bato (Peperonia pellucida), Bawang (Alium sativum L.), Ampalaya (Momordica charantia (L.) Background of the Study

Synthetis Drugs, on the other hand are those manufactured using different artificial ingredients through chemical means in the laboratory. (United Nations Office on Drugs and crime, 2009) Due to studies and reports about the different side effects of commercially manufactured synthetic medicines intended for the same illness types, the usage of these Natural Medicines that promise no side effects may actually help the people. (United Nations Office on Drugs and crime, 2009)

Background of the Study

The Philippine government itself promotes the use of these 10 medicinal plants to provide cures to common ailments and generate jobs for farmers, manufacturers, distributors, entrepreneurs, and exporters who depend on the local herbal industry.(Ped Xing, 2012) With these reasons, the researcher wanted to pursue the study in order to know whether or not people of Marinduque are already utilizing these medicinal plants as primary treatment method for common illnesses as stated above.

Statement of the Problem The study aims to determine whether or not Medicinal Plants approved by DOH are preferred to be used over commercially available synthetic medicines in treating common ailments in the Province of Marinduque. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions: What is the Demographic Profile of the Respondents in terms of Age Educational Background Occupation Monthly Family Income Family Size

Between the 10 Medicinal Plants approved by the Department of Health and Synthetic Over-the-counter drugs, what is preferred by the respondents to use in treating common illnesses?

Review of Related Literature

Natural medicine has been an effective treatment since the ancient times. Nature provides a wide variety of plants that contain medicinal properties. The powerful ingredients found in the stems, leaves, roots, flowers, and seeds of certain plants have natural healing properties that have been found to cure various health problems. (Rothrock, 2006) In the United States last 2002, survey revealed that herbalism or use of herbal medicines ranked second with 18.9 % as one of the Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) that showed the willingness of people to use herbal medicines. (google.com) The WHO (2010) together with the African Union and Southern African Development all passed resolutions that urged its member states to implement National policies and regulations on traditional medicine.

The use of herbal medicine is also a part of Republic

Act no. 8423 otherwise known as the Traditional Alternative Medicine Act of 1997 approve by former President Fidel V. Ramos on December 9, 1997 that also created the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC) that aims to improve the quality and delivery of health care services to the Filipino people through the development of traditional and alternative health care and its integration into the national health care delivery system.

Theoretical Framework
Leslie, et. Als Theory of the mind tells us that things necessary for our survival, medicines for example are preferred or decided intentionally in order to suffice the human need. We act intentionally because our energy is then focused in the achievement of such purpose. Specifically, people would intentionally prefer to choose the drug or medicine that they think is more suitable to their need and capacity to avail them or if they are more than able to do so, choosing the easier or more native (as in medicinal plants) would then again be based on their intention.

Conceptual Paradigm
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
Age Educational Background Occupation Monthly Family Income Family Size

DEPENDENT VARIABLE Preference on treating common ailments (Medicinal Plants or Synthetic Medicines)

Methodology
Research Design The study uses a descriptive type of Research Design to determine whether or not the people of Marinduque prefer to use medicinal plants approved by the Department of Health in treating common ailments over synthetic overthe-counter drugs.

Research Instruments (Data gathering Procedures) The study will make use of questionnaires and answer forms to know what the respondents prefer to use in treating common ailments and illness usually experienced in their everyday life.

Methodology
Population and Sampling Technique The study will use cluster sampling in getting the number of barangays from each municipality in Marinduque and simple random sampling technique to obtain the number of respondents from every barangay chosen as the sample from the particular town.

Statistical Treatment
The data will be obtained and summarized after which the percentage will be used using the formula. Percentage: Where P = Percentage F = Frequency of respondents N = total no. of respondents
