Superheat Recovery Technology, SHR_WH
Large refrigeration systems generate large amounts of heat. For systems to operate properly, this heat must be disposed off. In most cases it is simply discharged from the system's condenser into the environment. Sometimes, however, recovering part of this wasted heat and using it to displace purchased fuel makes economic sense.

Results: The combined used of all the technologies has helped McDonald's reduce its energy consumptions and reduction in CO2 emissions by 2730 tonnes. On the business end, these initiatives have helped McDonald's save a substantial amount of over $300000 approx, in operational costs per year.

McDs Germany developed new lighting systems for its retaurants kitchen together with Trilux, a supplier of lighting systems. McDs Mexico is testing the use of solar hot water heating to reduce the consumption of liquefied petroleum (LP) gas to heat water in four of their restaurants. McDs France designed an interactive software based energy management system, EcoProgess, to help monitor and reduce energy consumptions in restaurants.

McDonalds Belgium, Sweden and Netherlands are beginning to source renewable energy for their restaurants. Renewable energy is also used in the Ecological Restaurant in Brazil. Photovoltaic sheets were installed in the restaurants roof to capture solar energy and turn it into electric energy

Alternative Energy Technologies in The Restaurants

Support alternatives to hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) based refrigerants, since HFCs are known to be greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. McDonalds refrigerant usage is very small compared to other industries. The 1st HFC-free restaurant opened in Europe in January 2003. McDonalds Europe is currently developing additional HFC-free alternatives in their restaurants and 2nd HFC-free restaurant opened in Denmark at the end of 2008.
