A day in the life: Consumer VCC use case

The family dog needs a walk. Mary receives a call from her husband, Bob, as she is about to walk out the door. She answers the call on her dual-mode phone and continues the call as she leaves her house. Once outside and out of range of her homes WiFi network, the call is handed over to her mobile service network without dropping the call. While talking to Bob, Marys phone beeps, indicating that an e-mail with photo attachments from an interior designer has been delivered to her unified mailbox. Mary is anxious to see a picture of curtains that the interior designer sent her, so she finishes her call with Bob and opens the e-mail as she steps back inside the house. Once in the house, the dual-mode phone seamlessly hands the call back to the WiFi network, resulting in improved indoor coverage.

Call delivery options provided by Alcatel-Lucent Mobility Management Application Server (MM AS) option: The IMS core network emulates the MSC to CS network for subscriber access on the WiFi network Latest location in home location register (HLR) indicates call-delivery location. Alcatel-Lucent IMS core network options include:
Visited MSC emulation (some voice over WLAN [VoWLAN] solutions and broadband service router [BSR] Femto) Gateway/visited MSC emulation (some VoWLAN solutions and Circuit Mobile Extension [CME])

NeDS function determines call-delivery routing Service logic function routes the call to the appropriate domain (IMS or CS) based on the current state of registration within the domains, and operator and subscriber preferences
Partial gateway MSC emulation (some VoWLAN and all VoIP/DORA solutions)

33 | Consumer Voice Call Continuity Solution | January 2008

Alcatel-Lucent 2008 All Rights Reserved, CNV2888071207

Advantages of each call delivery method

NeDS Supports dual registration
Faster handover procedure because user equipment does not have to register in other domain first Faster call delivery to IMS With retry to CS, if IMS coverage lost without IMS de-registration, retry will complete call to CS rather than voice mail Supports Circuit Service Notification Application (CSNA), which requires dual registration

MM AS Supports SMS delivery from legacy SMS service centers to dual-mode UEs

Supports IMS as serving MSC architecture

Enabling CDMA 3G-1x to 3G-1x calls to route in the 3G-1x network Allows gradual evolution from existing network architecture

Supports specific cases using multiple types of IMS access networks

Wi-Fi/HRPD Rev 0

Supports provisioning for different types of IMS access networks, including:

VoIP capable access network (Wi-Fi) Non-VoIP capable access network: General packet radio system (GPRS), high-rate packet data (HRPD) Rev 0
