Many students find summarizing confusing and overwhelming. According to a report of the National Reading Panel (NRP) "Teaching Children to Read" many studies indicate that summarizing is a good method of integrating ideas and generalizing from the text information. Furthermore, the instruction of summarization improves memory for what is read, both in terms of free recall and answering questions.
Student mastery of this strategy is also important because summarizing is also used as a part of multiple other comprehension strategies (i.e.: Synthesizing). The intent of this presentation is to not only introduce students to summarizing but to encourage them to practice this skill outside the classroom and not just in reading, but in other real life aspects of their lives.
One of the ways in which students may get scaffolding in summarizing is by initially using a graphic organizer. Graphic organizers lend themselves to schematic organization which will enable students to independently organize information without this aid making it prior knowledge for students if practiced frequently. Hence, in this presentation, students are introduced to the concept map, and are encourage to use it in all guided practice activities before they use them independently.
