The 1930's - The Great Depression

1930s: the Great Depression

The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965. They mandated de jure racial segregation in all public facilities, with a supposedly "separate but equal" status for black Americans

March 31, 1933 - The Civilian Conservation Corps is authorized under the Federal Unemployment Relief Act. It would provide work for two and onehalf million men during the succeeding nine years and help construct many national park and other projects across the United States.

By the 1930s money was scarce because of the depression In the Great Depression - democracy, capitalism, individualism. Between 1929 and 1932 the income of the average American family was reduced by 40%, from $2,300 to $1,500. Economics dominated politics in the 1930's. The Social Security Act of 1935 set up a program to ensure an income for the elderly. The Wagner Act of 1935 gave workers the legal right to unionize. United States : from a laissez-faire economy to an economy regulated by the federal government. The Presidents of the 1930s were Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Lynching in America
Lynching was originally a system of punishment used by whites against African American slaves The granting of civil rights to freedmen in the Reconstruction era (186577) aroused anxieties among white citizens, who came to blame African Americans for their own wartime hardship, economic loss, and forfeiture of social privilege. African Americans, and whites active in the pursuit of equal rights, were frequently lynched in the South during Reconstruction, but lynchings reached a peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Southern states enacted a series of segregation and Jim Crow laws to reestablish white supremacy. Notable lynchings of civil rights workers during the 1960s in Mississippi contributed to galvanizing public support for the Civil Rights Movement and civil rights legislation.

The Whites are politically superior
There are laws to protect the Negros but they are denied by the Whites

The Whites belong to the higher social hierarchy

Even though the blacks are educated, the Whites (even the blue-collared workers) undervalue them

Americans are easily manipulated They have shallow knowledge about Iran

Kazeem, Firoozehs father tries very hard to adapt American life and pursue the American dream

America dominated the global economic

Even though Iranians (Firoozeh & Kazeem) can seek for job opportunities in other countries but they rather work in America with low salary

CONVERGENCES
Educationist Education to ward off oppression

Social
Both Negros and Iranians were discriminated against because they are minority

Economy
The Negros and the Iranian depend on the economy of America for job, settlement and security

Politic
All bounded by American law and enforcement; they have no rights to voice out inequality an anjust law is no law at all

DIVERGENCES
The Negros were discriminated because of their history, whereas the Iranians were discriminated because of the revolution

SOCIAL
The Great Debater The Negros were asked to debate at Oklahoma City Universitys off-campus site Funny in Farsi After winning the impromptu speech contest, she was investigated for her background because she is Iranian. On her way to Paris, she was held by the policemen because of her suspicious profile (17 year old Iranian travelling alone to Paris). After the Iranian Revolution, the Americans treated the Iranians badly. page 117, vendors selling tshirts and sticker bumpers Iranians Go Home and Wanted: Iranians for Target Practice The impact of the conflict between America and Iran forced the Nigerian companies to choose side (America) and not hire Iranian workers. When a black farmer was found out lying about the his knowledge of the Union, he was beaten to a pulp but the white farmer was

ECONOMY
The Great Debater unemployment: the Negros were denied jobs (refer to Samantha Bookes debate speech) Funny in Farsi Kazem started working with National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) when he was 17 years old and he had worked hard to climb the corporate ladder and eventually became the a senior project manager. However, after the Iranian Revolution, he was forced to leave because the buildings if refineries in Iran were halted. He tried to apply at other companies but denied because he is Iranian The impact of the conflict between America and Iran forced the Nigerian companies to choose side (America) and not hire Iranian workers. Kazem couldnt be hired because he was Iranian

Most Negros is involved in certain sectors that have low pay; lecturers and sharecroppers/farmers. None were among the law enforcers Capitalist

POLITIC
The Great Debater Funny in Farsi Segregation of education/school enrolment Iranian Revolution affects political for blacks only and whites only. affair between Iran and United States. After the 66 Americans were held captive for 444 days by the Iranians, the affair was made aggravated by the conflict
