The name Vodafone comes from Voice data fone, chosen by the company to reflect the provision of voice and data services over mobile phones.
Former logo used by Vodafone until introduction of the Speechmark logo in 1998.

In 1998 Vodafone introduced its Speechmark logo, as it is a quotation mark in a circle; the O's in the Vodafone logotype are opening and closing quotation marks, suggesting conversation.

History

Vodafone was formed in 1984 as a subsidiary of Racal Electronics Plc. Then known as Racal Telecom Limited, approximately 20% of the company's capital was offered to the public in October 1988. It was fully demerged from Racal Electronics Plc and became an independent company in September 1991, at which time it changed its name to Vodafone Group Plc.

The Racal Electronics Group won its bid for the private sector UK Cellular licence. It sets up the Racal Telecomms Division and names the new network Vodafone to reflect the provision of voice and data services over mobile phones. Based in Newbury, the company has less than 50 employees, all in one building.
Vodafone was formed in as a subsidiary of Racal Electronics Plc, then known as Racal Telecom Limited.

The Vodafone analogue network was the first cellular network to launch in the UK, and the UKs first ever mobile call was made from St Katherines Dock in London to Newbury a few minutes past midnight on 1 January 1985.
Racal Telecomms Plc floats on the London and New York Stock Exchanges. The flotation valued Racal Telecom at 1.7 billion.

1988 1990

Vodafone customer base reached 500,000.

Vodafone was fully demerged from Racal Electronics Plc and became an independent company. Vodafone and Telecom Finland made the worlds first international roaming call.

1993

Vodafone opened its first High Street store. Vodafone connected its 1,000,000 customer.

Vodafone Group International was formed to acquire licences and supervise overseas interests.
The first SMS in the UK was sent over the Vodafones digital network. Vodafone joined the Globalstar consortium to develop and launch a Low Earth Orbiting Satellite mobile phone service.

Expansion of Vodafone's own chain of retail outlets.

Vodafone connected its 2,000,000 customer.


The launch of the first prepay service Pay As You Talk. The number of overseas roaming partners reached 100.

Vodafone introduced its new Speechmark logo. On 5 January Vodafone connected the 5,000,000 customer in the UK.

Vodafone AirTouch Plc was created as a result of a successful merger between Vodafone Group Plc and US mobile provider AirTouch Communications Inc. In 2000 it reverted to its former name Vodafone Group Plc.
Vodafone acquired Mannesmann AG - owner of the largest German mobile network. It cost about 112 billion and was one of the largest corporate merger ever. It almost doubled the size of the Vodafone Group making it the largest mobile telecommunications company and one of the top ten companies, by market capitalization, in the world.

2001

Vodafone made the worlds first 3G roaming call between Spain and Japan.
Vodafones first global communications campaign launched in August. The campaign featured TV, cinema, print, online and outdoor media.

2002 2004

Vodafone launched the first commercial European GPRS roaming service.

Vodafone launched its first 3G service in Europe with the Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS data card.

2005

Vodafone launched 3G broadband through HSDPA (high-speed download packet access) offering faster than 3G speeds.
