Conservation message
These birds have two toes pointing forwards and two backwards. They use their feet for climbing up, down, and sideways on tree trunk.
Water birds have webbing between the toes for swimming. This also prevent the birds from sinking while walking in the soft sand or mud near the waters edge.
Two thick toes. Their feet protect the birds by kicking with their powerful feet and sharp claws.
Spoonbills use their bills to SHOVEL small fishes and crustaceans in shallow waters.
Milky storks stalk slowly or just stand still with their bills in the water, and when they feel their prey, they SNAP it up.
Macaws CRACK seeds and nuts like pliers with their hard bills
The bones are hollow. This reduces the birds weight to conserve energy for flight. Large wing bones for attachment of powerful flight muscle.
Fusion of many bones, including vertebrae appendages, and girdles provides rigidity for flight.
The breastbone has adapted into a large keel, suitable for the attachment of large, powerful flight muscles.
Zoo Negara actively involve in conservation release programme in breeding the Milky Storks, a species that is found locally. In collaboration with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, these birds are breed in captivity and some are released back to the wild at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park & Kuala Gula, Perak.
