Consecuentemente, el diagnostico y el tratamiento han diferido enormemente, creando mucha confusin entre los dentistas. Sin embargo, es absolutamente indispensable que el clnico actualice y profundice sus conocimientos para poder diagnosticar y tratar eficientemente a pacientes con signos y sntomas de DTM.

Igualmente hay que recordar que una pequea discrepancia de 1, 2, o 3 mm no constituyen aparentemente un factor de riesgo. Las desviaciones mayores a 3 mm conllevan factores de riesgo de DTM.

En un estudio de 127 nios con bruxismo (de 6 a 9 aos de edad), solo 17 mantenan el bruxismo cinco aos despus y ninguno presentaba sntomas de disfuncin masticatoria
Este estudio llegaba a la conclusin de que el bruxismo infantil es un fenmeno que desaparece sin tratamiento, no se asocia con sntomas significativos y no conlleva un aumento de riesgo del bruxismo adulto.

Es necesario informar a los padres preocupados acerca de la naturaleza benigna de esta actividad, y pedirles que vigilen cualquier posible queja de sus hijos. Si aparecen problemas masticatorios, el nio debe ser examinado en el consultorio dental.
