WHAT ARE HARMONICS?

Harmonics are voltage waveform distortions. Odd numbered harmonics are dominant and very destructive. They are predominant in the range of higher frequencies. Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) on odd numbered harmonics influence distortion in a great way. Certain harmonics have distinguished themselves in being specially harmful to power systems. Third harmonics (3rd) and multiples (5th, 7th, 9th) receive special attention as triplets. Triplets, in frequency harmonic dominance and in sequential analysis return via the neutral, with values higher than the phase. Harmonics with negative sequences ( 5th, 11th, 17th) have a large impact on transformers and motors because their rotation is opposed to the rotation of the base (60Hz) component.
