NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Some non verbal messages usually accompany verbal message Verbal and non verbal together form the total meaning of the message There is something heard and something implied For full understanding one has to know what is communicated through words and without them Unworded messages are transmitted by non-verbal clues and signs (Body movement s and gestures) Unworded message exists in the form of META COMMUNICATION and KINESIC COMMUNICATION

META COMMUNICATION

It is the implied meaning conveyed by the choice of words, tone of voice, fumbling, silence or omission It is a message communicated not through words but along with words Meta communication can be intentional or unintentional

Example : Try to each the airport , well on time.


The remark is a sound advice But the sentence without stating implies that the person concerned in not punctual but a habitual late comer Parting wishes to someone Best of luck : Conveys feelings of good wishes Also implies a sense of anxiety and fear that every thing may not turn our fine

PARALANGUAGE

This includes pitch, loudness of voice and speech breakers such as er, ah, uh or hesitations Prolonged gaps , pauses or silence are forms of paralanguage When a leader speaks slowly with sounds of er, ah, ur and with pauses implies that he is being very careful and circumspect

KINESIC COMMUNICATION

This Is a message conveyed through non verbal acts Non verbal acts in the form of body movement Gestures, winking, smiling, postures or style of dressing and grooming Sends a message that supports or contradicts the verbal message It includes the entire non verbal behaviour of the communicator

Instrumental body movements


When we move our hands to perform some work All body movements with the exception of instrumental movements are meaningful and communicative Communicative movements act as non verbal clues Wiping ones mouth when confronted by a superior communicates nervousness Movement of hands to signal goodbye communicates courtesy and friendship

CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Conscious or unconscious

Non verbal clues reveal the state of mind, the inner feelings and emotions These may be real or just affected Trained actors orators intentionally use gestures, facial expressions, bodily movements and postures to create an intended impact Effective writers use stylistic devices to convey hidden feelings and attitude In real life situations we betray our inner thoughts and feelings through unconscious signs The speaker may never realize that he or she is conveying these feelings

Symbols of body language


Emblems : When movement of body parts represents ideas as icons or images Illustrators : When movement of hands and arms represents size or shape Body manipulators : These are acts of touching ones own body or an object for no reason Facial expressions : The most expressive part of our body that reflects our thoughts and feelings. Smile, own, blush, paleness reveal our positive and negative feelings Regulators Eye movement : Squinting, winking, staring are called regulators

Types of non verbal communication

Body Language : Kinesics


Body language is the way body communicates by its physical movements. Inner state of emotions , expressed through different parts of the body (physical) movement - nodding, blinking, shrugging, waving

Facial expressions- Divulge hidden emotions - Anger, annoyance, confusion, joy, love, sorrow, interest

Eye contact - Best indicator - Angry/the eyebrows Posture -Relax, slouch(self confidence) Gestures -Tapping, fidgeting, tapping foot (nervousness) clenched fists-anger

Sign language - symbols, visual audio symbols

Paralanguage - Means the way we use our voice in uttering words pitch, volume, speed, stress on words

Space language(Proxemics) - Use of space, 1.5 ft complete circle, meeting, setting Surroundings - Room Setting, office setting - Time - Punctuality - Waiting time (Doctors, lawyers, special skills) - Time given to task - Time given to a person
