The Spirit of Work


How does your spirituality find expression in mentoring, in your attitude about your mentee, in your relationships with their families, case manager and others?

Leadership

The skill of influencing people to work enthusiastically toward goals identified as being for the common good.

Authority

The skill of getting people to willingly do your will because of your personal influence.

Power

The ability to force or coerce someone to do your will, even if they would choose not to, because of your position or your might.

When do we use power? We resort to using power in a relationship when we dont have any authority, either because it has broken down or because we never had it to begin with.

Mentors are Volunteers

You can rent their hands, arms, legs and backs, but their hearts, minds, commitment, creativity and ideas must be volunteered.

Leading with Authority


Think of a person in your life, living or dead, who has led you with authority; someone for whom you would walk through walls. List the qualities of character that this person possessed or possesses.

Leaders Need Vision


Leadership, going out ahead to

show the way, requires openness to inspiration. The leader needs to see clearly what is out therea goal, a dream, a visionary concept.

VISION
Start with a vision that is bigger than you are. Servant leadership starts with a vision and ends with a servant heart that helps people live according to that vision.

Changing Your Focus


Concentrate on meeting the

needs of your volunteers so they can concentrate on the needs of the clients (mentees). But, how do you know what people need to succeed?

Leadership is
not about controlling people; its about

caring for people. not about being boss; its about being present for people and building a community at work. not about holding on to territory; its about letting go of ego, bringing your spirit with you; being your best and most authentic self.

more concerned with creating an environment in which people can feel good about themselves, can find meaning in their life, and can bring their spirits to others. largely a matter of paying attention. about love.

Effective Leadership

The key to leadership is accomplishing tasks while building relationships. Effective leaders find the balance between task and relationship orientation.

Servant-First
Servant Leadership begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve; to take care of other peoples highest priority needs.

Five Ways of Being


Be Authentic Be Vulnerable Be Accepting Be Present Be Useful

Be Authentic
Be who you are.

Be the same person in every

circumstance. Hold to the same values in every role you have. Always be your real self.

Be Vulnerable
Be honest with your feelings in the

context of your mentoring. Be open with your doubts and fears and concerns about the situation. Be able to admit mistakes. Being vulnerable takes a great deal of courage.

Be Accepting
Embrace disagreement as a human part

of the process of mentoring. Accept ideas, not without reflection, but as valid for discussion and review. Focus on the ideas, not on the person who presents them. Even if you end up rejecting an idea, accept the person.

Be Present
Have your whole self available to the

mentee. Be available to others as your respond to the problems and challenges of team members. Think about itconcentrate on it. If you remain centered and grounded, others will be more assured and confident.

Be Useful
Be a resource to your mentee. Listen, question, encourage, coach,

teach, model. Ask: What do you think we should do? Build a team. Give them the tools they need to make proper decisions.

How do I become a Servant Leader?


Think about the concepts and discuss

them with others. Make a decision to be a servant in every situation. Enter each day thoughtfully solitude and prayer may be helpful. Keep in touch with truth-tellers who can keep you headed in the right direction.
