Electronic Medical Record Systems

An electronic medical record management system is an application used by organizations that deliver care for creating and maintain a computerized medical record of an individual. Market Drivers Digital records (EMR) leads to a streamlining of the entire data entry process in the healthcare sector. This has led to the blocking or reduction of the overhead cost in administration. Digital records has resulted in significant reduction data inaccuracy leading to better efficiency of the care provided to the individuals. Also collection of clinical data at the point of care enhances the efficiency and improves the data quality. Increased efficiency and accuracy of the data collection has resulted in pharmaceutical companies and regulatory authorities use the collected data to improve the post marketing surveillance PMS of drugs. Government and private services such as reimbursement and insurance hassles are expected to reduce leading to increase in the overall patient satisfaction. Market Barriers The lack of awareness about the benefits of EMR is the largest perceived barrier. The prevailing low awareness about the advantages of EMR among the small and medium scale healthcare service providers is limiting the adoption rate. Lack of compatibility technology available in the market. High cost of initial implementation is a large barrier. EMR is an evolving concept and hence requires more user friendly interface. The vendors lack domicile knowledge in healthcare resulting in various gaps in the technology development. The gap existing between the information technology and healthcare needs to be bridged by vendors to develop effective EMR products.

Key Players
Xtremum Solutions Pune, India-based Xtremum Solutions, a healthcare technology solutions and services provider, has introduced Praxify, a physician practice management (PM) solution based on cloud, integrated with an electronic medical record (EMR) application suite on Apple iPad. A derivative of Practice Simplify, Xtremum Solutions Praxify has been designed to address the mobility of physicians and anywhere-anytime access to patient medical data. The solution is built exclusively on the iPad platform, unlike other applications that are designed for web, and then made compatible with the iPad. Using this system, physicians will be able to access and view medical history, patient medical records, images, lab results and billing details, and prescribe medication on the go. It enables caregivers to streamline and automate their practices, manage patient interactions, and offer secured patient information at the point of decision through phone or direct consultations, in order to deliver efficient and errorfree care.

Future Scope
Electronic medical records and electronic health records have huge potential for growth in developing countries like India due to increasing middle class and increasing per capita income. However a streamlined process need to be propagated by the government for this to happen. Some other steps the government can take are: The government should enact a law that incentivizes EMR creation. Most hospital administrators are reluctant to initiate the process, because of the costs of building a large IT infrastructure essentially from scratch The government should set up a committee to ensure standardization in IT practices and processes, especially in EMR systems. The number of EMR standards and providers can be dizzying. The healthcare industry needs to spend more on IT. A survey by NASSCOM, the country's top software body, shows that midsized hospitals spend 1 to 1.5 percent of their turnover on IT, while large hospitals spend nearly 2 percent. By contrast, in industries like travel, commerce, banking, and entertainment, 5 to 8 percent of revenue is being invested in IT. Finally, the government will have to set an example by allocating sufficient resources to introduce EMRs in government hospitals. Like Aadhaar (the system for allotting a Unique Identification Number for each Indian), EMRs can become the cornerstone of healthcare delivery in India. Along with the government involvement software vendors involved in the EMR development have to take an active role in developing institutive and user-friendly environment which will help in easy implementation of the technology. Another major area where the current software players can play a major role is in the reduction of the overall cost of the system implementation.
