Summer Training Seminar on Industrial Automation

Shri Ram College of Engineering & Management, Palwal Affiliated to M.D university, Haryana

Submitted by: Md. Shamsher Ansari 93059 ME-A (8th SEM)

Introduction
Prolific Systems & Technologies Pvt. Ltd. is Asias largest advanced industrial automation training company having fully equipped, asset backed facilities across 21 branches in 10 Indian states. Prolific imparts extensive, in-depth, hands-on practical training to graduate and undergraduate engineers.

What is Automation???
AUTOMATION is basically delegation of human control function to technical equipment : to increase production to reduce cost to reduce manpower to improve safety working conditions to reduce power consumption to improve quality

EXAMPLES OF AUTOMATION
Automatic machine tools to process partsCNC m/c industrial robots

automatic material handling feedback control systems

EXAMPLES OF AUTOMATION

Automatic material handling Conveyors

Industrial Robots

feedback control systems

How can it be done???

There are many systems made for the automation process some of them are
Programmable Logic Controller Electronic Control using Logic Gates Hard wired logic Control Pneumatic Control Manual Control

SCADA

WHAT IS SCADA?
SCADA stands for Supervisory

Control

And Data Acquisition.

SCADA refers to a system that collects data from various sensors at a factory, plant or in other remote locations and then sends this data to a central computer which then manages and controls the data.

Industrial Automation Components

According to SCADA there are three basic component:

*Field Instruments *Control Hardware *Control Software

Field Instruments(Sensors)
SENSORS are basically TRANSDUCERS. Examples: RTDs Pressure Transducer Humidity Detector Level Detector

Control hardware
Control hardware controls the input/output of associated sensors and commands. There are following control hardware which are generally used: PID Controllers

Programmable logic controllers (PLC)

Control Software

Control software is installed in the computer which is going to control a particular instrument.

Features of Control Software

MONITORING

Graphical representation Waveforms Digital data analysis

Input/output Control:

Command can be generated by software itself to control the input output operation.

PLC

Programmable logic controller PLCs

Programmable logic controller (PLCs), also referred to as programmable controller, are in the computer family. They are used in commercial and industrial application. A PLCs monitors input, make decisions based on its program, and controls output to automate a process or machine.

Pushbutton (Sensors), in this simple example, connected to PLC inputs, can be used to start and stop a motor connected to a PLC through a motor starter (actuator)

ACTUATORS
ACTUATORS are used to produce mechanical motion to complete the certain objective.

Various actuators: AC motors DC motors Stepper motors

Advantages of PLCs
less wiring. wiring between devices and relay contacts are done in the PLC program. Easier and faster to make changes. Trouble shooting aids make programming easier and reduce downtime. The same, as well as more complex tasks, can be done with a PLC.

Easy to maintain

Areas of Application
Manufacturing / Machining Food / Beverage Metals Power Mining Petrochemical / Chemical

Discrete Input

Instrumentation
It is a branch of engineering which is used for measurement of process parameters and electrical parameter it includes Flow meter, Thermistors, Thermocouple, Level Instruments etc.

Transducers: These are the devices which

converts one form of energy into another form of energy.

Sensors: Sensors are the Transducers which convert

one form of energy into measurable form of energy. Ex-Ambient meter, Flow meter, Burden tube type pressure sensor

Human Machine interface (HMI)

HMI is the smallest form of SCADA which is used for monitoring and controlling and it is combination of hardware and software.

Types of HMI
Keypad Touch screen Keypad + touch screen

Benefits HMI/SCADA
1.

2. 3.

4. 5.

Powerful monitoring and control over your production Ease of use for New and experienced users. Robust connectivity to other software, system and devices Powerful thin client technology. True client /server Architecture for ease Scale ability

Difference between SCADA and HMI

SCADA
It is complete software. It works at low temp Screen ratio of SCADA is high. Local & Remote control Data base connectivity is possible Range of SCADA is 6 Km

HMI
It is combination of hardware And software. It works at high temperatures upto 55 . Screen Ratio of HMI is low LAN area control. It cant control remote object Data base connectivity is not possible Range of HMI is 100m.

Manufacturing industries. Electric power generation, transmission and Distribution. Traffic signals. Cement and petrochemicals industries. Automobiles industries
