scenario.
Coal meets around 52% of primary commercial energy needs.

Around 66% of India's power generation is coal based.


India is the 3rd largest coal producing country in the world

after China and USA.

Date of incorporation:- Coal india ltd was formed as holding

company with 5 subsidiaries on 21.10.1975


Corporate status:- Incorporated under the companies Act,1956

and is owned by government of India and under the MINISTRY OF COAL


Business profile:- Engaged in the mining of coal , coal based

products and mining consultancy


Vision :- To emerge from the position of domestic leader to

leading global player in the energy sector by adopting best practices from mine to market with due care to environmental and social sustenance
Mission:- Produce the planned quantity of coal efficiently and

economically with due regard to safety, conservation & quality

history
1973-74:-Nationalization of coal mines,

Incorporation of the Company as 'Coal Mines Authority Limited'. 1975-76:-Change of name of the Company to 'Coal India Limited'. 1979-80:-Construction of the low temperature carbonized plant, working on commercial basis. 1980-81:-Construction of five new washeries 1985-86:-Formation of NCL and SECL as Subsidiaries 1992-93:-Formation of MCL 1996-97:-Rating of A+ 2003-04:-Overall production crosses 300million tones. 2006-12:-Award of Mini Ratna, Navaratna, Maharatna.

COKING COAL : These have coking properties . Mainly used in steel making and metallurgical industries. Also used for hard coke manufacturing . SEMI COKING COAL: Mainly used as blend-able coal in steel making, merchant coke manufacturing and other metallurgical industries. NON-COKING COAL: Mainly used as thermal grade coal for power generation. WASHED AND BENEFICIATED COAL: Used in manufacturing of hard coke for steel making Beneficiated non-coking coal is used by cement, sponge iron and other industrial plants .

Coal Videsh was formed with the intent of enhancing the energy security of the nation.
CIL has established a joint venture Company ICVL, with NTPC, SAIL, RINL and NMDC for acquisition of metallurgical and thermal coal assets outside India. CIL is pursuing acquisition of Coal assets abroad through Coal Videsh CIL has established a wholly own subsidiary COAL INDIA AFRICANA LIMITADA (CIAL) in Mozambique in Aug 2010
