Collective nouns take singular verbs. Examples A swarm of bees is coming in this direction. A herd of buffaloes is grazing in the field. This football team is very good.

Uncountable nouns take singular verbs. Examples The water is hot. The air is cool. The sand is very dry. There is ice cream in the refrigerator.
