Changing Meaning with Using Stress
I said she might consider a new haircut. a. Not just a haircut.
I said she might consider a new haircut. b. It's a possibility.
I said she might consider a new haircut. c. It was my idea.
I said she might consider a new haircut. d. Not something else.
I said she might consider a new haircut. e. Don't you understand me?
I said she might consider a new haircut. f. Not another person.
I said she might consider a new haircut. g. She should think about it. it's
a good idea.
Where to Stress?!
Different places to use stress:
• important content words
• to add extra emotional impact

Example:
I am so hungry.  I am SO hungry.
Stress CONTENT words
1. Nouns
= person/ place/ thing
2. Adjectives
= words that describe nouns
3. Principal Verbs (most)
= action words
4. Adverbs
= words that describe verbs
(they usually end in “ly”)

Non-Stressed Words
Non-stressed words are called FUNCTION WORDS

1. Determiners
= the, a, some, a few
2. Auxiliary Verbs (SOMETIMES STRESSED!)
= don't, am, can, were
3. Prepositions
= before, next to, opposite
4. Conjunctions
= but, while, as
5. Pronouns
= they, she, us

NO…! Don’t use water… that’s oil burning! Turn off the stove!...
Hello?! There’s a kitchen fire at 67 North River Street. Third floor, apartment 9.
We’re trying to control it.
No…. No one’s hurt.
Try not to breathe the smoke… cover your nose with your shirt!
And stay close to the floor.
Alexander: Wait! I think it’s getting better.
Dave: Uh. I think it’s under control now. Yes. I’ll stay on the line.
Hello? Everything seems to be under control again. Sorry to bother you.
OK, thanks. Uh huh. Bye.
Alexander: Were they angry that we called?
Dave: No, but they said we should be more careful.
Alexander: Oh no! I hear fire trucks coming.

Jack: Pardon me?
Teacher: You were also late yesterday. Was your watch broken
yesterday, too?
Jack: No. But the bus was crowded.
Teacher: Interesting. And you weren’t here last week. How come?
Jack: I was sick.
Teacher: I see. And do you have your homework?
Jack: Homework?
Try Again
Try the conversation again, but change the tone.

#1: The teacher is really mad but Jack doesn’t really
