INDICATORS
 Compare the characteristics of
mechanical and electromagnetic
waves.
 Compare the characteristics of
transversal and longitudinal waves
 Investigate the wavelength on the
slinky for transversal and longitudinal
wave
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Student can be able to :
2. Determine the characteristics of
mechanical and electromagnetic
waves.
3. Determine the characteristics of
transversal and longitudinal waves
Wave ??????
A wave can be described as a disturbance
that travels through a medium from one
location to another location
or
The repeating and periodic disturbance
which moves through a medium from one
location to another is referred
Medium???????
Medium is a substance or
material which carries the wave.

1. Solid
2. Liquid
3. Gas
Types of waves according to the
medium
 Mechanical waves is a wave which
require a material medium for their
propagation Examples: water waves,
sound waves, seismic waves, and shock
waves.
 Electromagnetic waves is a wave that can
pass through vacuum in addition to
passing through matter. Examples:- light
waves, radio waves, micro waves, x-rays.
Type of waves according to the
direction of propagation

2. Draw the form of transversal wave and longitudinal wave and the parts
its!
a. Transversal wave
b. Longitudinal wave
3. Compare the slow movement and fast movement, what does the
comparison show as? Frequency
4. How does a wave can be traveled?
A wave can be traveled because of the propagation of energy without the
propagation of matter

4. How about the direction of wave vibration and direction wave movement in :
a. Transversal wave

In transversal wave direction of vibration perpendicular to the

propagation direction

b. Longitudinal wave

In Longitudinal wave direction of vibration parallel to the propagation

direction
5. What is called the 1 wavelength in transversal waves and
longitudinal wave?

One wavelength in the transversal wave can be defined the distance

between two close crests or two close troughs

One wavelength in the longitudinal wave can be defined the distance

between two close compression or two close expansion

6. Draw a conclusion :
CONCLUSION

A traveling wave can be defined as the propagation of

energy without the propagation of medium.
In transversal wave direction of vibration perpendicular to
the propagation direction
In Longitudinal wave direction of vibration parallel to the
propagation direction
One wavelength in the transversal wave can be defined the
distance between two close crests or two close troughs
One wavelength in the longitudinal wave can be defined the
distance between two close compression or two close
expansion

Mathematic wave

Wave Frequency is the number of waves passing definite

points in one second.
Frequency is symbolized by f and it’s IS Unit in hertz (Hz).
Period is the time needed to make one wave.
Period is symbolized by T and it’s IS Unit in second (s).
Spread velocity of wave = frequency x wavelength
The Formulation above as:
T=1/f
V = f x λ --- It’s IS unit in m/s
or
V = λ/T
Example :
2. An Earthquake can produce three kinds of waves. One
of them is a transversal wave of the type called S-
wave. The S-wave moves with a spread velocity of
5.000 m/s. Its wavelength is 417 m. What is the
frequency ?
Known : v = 5.000 m/s
λ = 417 m.
Asked : frequency (f)
Formula : v = f x λ or f = v / λ
Solution = f = 5.000/ 417 = 12 Hz
Problem :
Look at the picture below :
Y (m) 1,5 m

t (s)

Calculate :
• Amplitude c. 1 wavelength
• Period d. Spread velocity
• Frequency
Wave Frequency is the number of waves passing definite
points in one second.
Frequency is symbolized by f and it’s IS Unit in hertz (Hz).
Period is the time needed to make one wave.
Period is symbolized by T and it’s IS Unit in second (s).
Spread velocity of wave = frequency x wavelength
And it’s IS unit in m/s
