What is communication?

"We all use language to communicate, to express ourselves, to get our ideas across, and to connect with the person to whom we are speaking. When a relationship is working, the act of communicating seems to flow relatively effortlessly. When a relationship is deteriorating, the act of communicating can be as frustrating as climbing a hill of sand.

How has communication revolutionized over the information age?

Effective communication

Expressing our wants and feelings and opinions clearly and effectively is only half of the communication process needed for interpersonal effectiveness. The other half is complete only when the user interprets and understands the senders message in the same way the sender had intended it. I mean its the job of the listener to understand the implication of communication being a two way road. Effective communication is less of just exchanging information and more of understanding the emotion behind the information.

How do we know that a communication is effective??

An effective communication has the following aspects:


Which contributes to 45% of our communication. This basically comprises of the speaker who uses language and meaning to convey the message. This becomes effective through the right choice of words and optimum pauses as excessive use of these distracts the receiver.

Which contributes to the remaining 55% of the communication. It comprises of the listener , the audience , the interpreter. The communicators in this category should have the right posture, facial expressions and the body language showing that they are in tune with the words spoken. Moreover they should be good listeners so that the speaker feels comfortable, recognized and remembered.

TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE LISTENING

1)FACE THE SPEAKER-sit up straight or lean forward to show ur attentiveness thourgh body language. 2)MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT-always maintain eye contant nd feel comfortable. 3)RESPOND APPROPRIATELY-to show that you understood ,ways say really,intersting.what happened next? 4)MINIMIZE INTERNAL ND EXTERNAK DISTRACTION. 5)KEEP AN OPEN MIND - wait until the speaker is finished before deciding that you disagree. 6)ENGAGE YOURSELF - ask questios for clarification , but,one again wait until the speaker has finished.
