INCIDENCE OF KIDNEY DISEASE

Department of Health (DOH) Mortality Statistics

Renal Disease is the tenth leading cause of death in the Philippines

Regional Reports
Renal disease ranks
No. 6 or 7 - among the 10 leading causes of mortality / morbidity

The estimated no. of end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients in the country is 120 / million population

10,644 - the estimated incidence rate of ESRD in the Philippines with a population of 88.7 million in 2007 (NSO projected population)
The same number of new ESRD patients will be requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT)

FUNCTIONS OF HUMAN KIDNEYS

Monitor and regulate body fluid Excrete fluid when the body has an excess Retain substance necessary for the body Produce and release variety of chemical to keep the body healthy Filter the entire blood supply every two minutes excreting waste materials thru the urine

Produce erythropoietin, a hormone that control the production of red blood cells by the bone marrow Kidneys plays a major role in the control of blood pressure

What Diseases Commonly Affecting the Kidneys

Infection is the most common disorder of the kidneys and the urinary tract. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections are very easy to treat.
Obstructions- includes kidneys stone. These are solid residues in the urinary tract that may cause obstruction to the flow of urine leading to infection of the kidneys.

Inflammation of the glomeruli, the small vessels in the nephrons, is called glomerulonephritis.

If not treated, patients may suffer slow progressive damage to the kidneys and develop kidney failure.

High Blood Pressure or Hypertension Prolonged hypertension damages the small arteries in the kidneys. Damaged kidneys cause more serious hypertension which in turn brings more damage to the kidneys

Diabetes may also damage the kidneys. It is the

leading cause of chronic renal failure in many countries

Some Drug, Herbal Medicine, solvents and insecticides can also harm the kidneys Abnormalities in the Urinary Tract congenital or

inborn may lead to poor function, obstruction or

infection of kidneys

What are the warning signs of Kidney Disease

Puffiness in the eye area

Progressive swelling of parts of the body usually at the ankles

Back pain on the lower part, just below the ribcage
