understood in Biblical the missions can light of only be understood correctly if we theology. understand Who God is and what He has said & done.
From Creation to Commission

John employs pemp at least 24 times in his Gospel to speak of a servant being sent on an errand by his master (4.34; 5.23-24, 30, 37; 6.38-39, 44; 7.16, 28, 33; 8.16, 18, 26, 29; 9.4; 12.44-45, 49; 13.20; 14.24; 15.21; 16.5; 20.21). Most of the time Jesus is the Servant in view.
The phrase insinuates the sending of someone under authority by an authority (note the parallelism of 13.16). In the Synoptics the formula is employed by Christ, but when it is used it always speaks of a servant being sent by his master. The only non-Johannine use referring to Jesus is at Rom 8.3.
John also employs the phraseology of the Holy Spirit 3 times (14.26; 15.26; 16.7) and of believers twice (13.16; 20.21). Though John certainly emphasizes Jesus deity, he just as surely highlights His submissive service to the Father.
The NT makes reference to our missional God using another root, apostell Lk 4.43; Jn 1.6; 3.17, 34; 6.29; 10.36; 17.3; Acts 3.26; 7.35; 10.36; 13.26 (exapostell); 28.28; Gal 4.4 (exapostell), 6 (exapostell); 1Jn 4.9, 10; Rev 1.1; 22.6.

Heb 1.1-2.4 & Jude 1.4 highlights the uniqueness & finality of Christs communication & the written Record about Him given to us by the Apostles. (Cf Mt 21.37.)

And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel. God will initiate this missionary action. This missionary activity will be mediated thru the woman. This missionary activity will be brought about by a single male offspring.
First Glimpse
Now the LORD had said to Abram: Get out of your country, From your family And from your fathers house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
Note that this mission was costly, but also note the multiple blessings that more than matched what Abram gave up.
First Call of Glimpse Abraham
The promise of universal blessing is repeated at least 4 times in Genesis: 18.18; 22.18; 26.4; & 28.14.
The promise of Gen 12.3 comes true as the missionaries of the Church extend the message of the Gospel to all the families of the earth. John Piper
We know that there were other believers in that day. Why Abram was chosen we are not told.
Abrams destination was strategic he was sent to a crucial land bridge between Asia, Africa & Europe.
3 And Moses went up to God, and the LORD
called to him from the mountain, saying, Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob: 4 You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
God begins now to show how He planned to fulfill some of the promises He had made to Abraham.

Israel was called to be a missionary nation, but they failed their mission because they failed to be holy.
Note the phrase for all the earth is Mine: this emphasizes Gods sovereignty, but it also may refer to His care for all nations.
If Israel was Gods intended vehicle for evangelizing the nations, why does it appear that they failed so badly?

The OT prophets rebuked Israel for their disobedience to the Mosaic Cov & warned of Gods coming judgment. They also encouraged the people that the promised Messiah would indeed someday arrive.

it was an extension of Gods mission to provide a holy light to the Gentiles thru a remnant of faithful believers like Ezekiel, Daniel, and Nehemiah.

As the OT closes it appears that Gods mission to the nations had failed. However, in the Incarnation, the Perfect Israelite arrives. Israels role in the missio Dei is temporarily forfeited and transferred to Jesus Christ. His cross-cultural mission to earth marks the beginning of a transition in Gods mission strategy.
