After analyzing our collection, I realized I could add a Science standard.

The topics recycling and our environment are very important to me . I chose these standards because our community has JUST begun a recycling program. We are very excited about it and as an educator I have been collaborating with teachers about this issue to get our students involved and educated. Recycling is part of preserving our environment.

OUR MEDIA CENTER AND SCHOOLS CONTRIBUTIONS

Batteries and printer cartridges

Can and bottle recycle

Paper recycle Our science Club plants trees. Our Agriculture classes use hydroponics and have a compost pile.

RECYCLE CONTAINERS

We recycle printer cartridges, batteries, cans, bottles, and paper.

Class room data and activity information Interviews:

United States History- Dr. Nathalie Starling To meet standard, Dr. Starling stated that each class mustMake a face book or myspace page about a environmentalist of the 1960s that was pioneer of the different movements. She stated they also spend time evaluating our schools recycling programs and how the pioneers encouraged to save our earth.
Environmental Science and Science ClubMrs. Jessica Lyons and Mrs. Amber Teare Plant trees Recycle cans and bottles for whole school Project -- History of Environmental Science Timeline Project --Environmental Science Semester-Long Portfolio Project
Objective: The objective of this project is for students to research a topic of interest within the area of Environmental Science, and to present their research in an organized collection. Students will use the internet and other resource materials (books, scholarly journals, magazines, etc.) to research a chosen topic. They will then organize their research findings, as well as related materials (pictures, drawings, materials, etc.) into a cohesive portfolio presentation.

Ecological Footprint project Environmental Issues Group Project (test grade) Your group will be assigned one issue that threatens the stability of the planet: Overpopulation Climate change Habitat destruction The extinction of species or The destruction of natural resources

Collection Analysis by visually looking at collection. Much of the collection are used books purchased through public library sale therefore many old books.

Titlewave analysis showed that we are weak in section 360 (Social Services),and 550 earth sciences. Also that our average age in this collection is 1998

Collection Evaluation Techniques

Was able to review Islands High School Collection Evaluation. They are new school so the age of their collection is excellent but they lack DVDs and number of books. I was able to compare our collection with their analysis and we are definitely in need of updating our age of books.

After discussion, with two science teachers and one history teacher, we are lacking in up to date DVDs and fiction books. One teacher would like enough fiction books to be able to give her whole class a reading assignment.

SEHS COLLECTION 300S/500s WEAKNESSES

Weaknesses Old books- average age 1998. Damaged books- Bought many of these reference books form Public Library sale.

DVD and videos are outdated. Need to find current information. New programs are being started yearly.
Circulation statistics show that these types of books are checked out each semester by three teachers. New books and more books would entice more teachers to work these topics into their standards. --Collaboration Teachers have requested more fiction books on these topics

STRENGTHS

Strengths We have a small multicultural population that is serviced by the county with materials. We have many books that are new and updated because our current MS has been building the collection.

We have staff willing to work with us on picking material that they are familiar with and know it has quality.

Budget Summary
This project was such an eye-opener for me. I have watched my co-worker over the past three years spend hours in her office ordering materials. I never thought she could spend that much time. BUT now I KNOW! This was very time consuming and at times frustrating. I really got frustrated when I could not find any books for our ESOL students. I finally ordered some fiction books that I knew would satisfy my topic but they were VERY expensive. The Spanish titles cost $107.89 for three books. I was also disappointed with some of the books not having reviews. After reading some of the reviews, I realized that it is very important to have them. For instance, I was going to order a book on polar Ice that was from a very reputable publisher but after reading the reviews I decided against it since I had so many other titles I could choose. I spent $4063.50 total. I ordered many books for our Special Education students. They love animal big picture books so I ordered them some endangered species titles. I put an e-book series on my dream list at the bottom but with all the web sites and public library resources, I did not feel I needed to use a 3rd of my budget on an ebook. DVDs were also very much needed to update our collection so I spent $889.70. This project helped me see how fast a budget can be spent, how time consuming ordering materials correctly will be, and how frustrating it can be when you have a specific need to fill and you can not find the material you want. To find books, videos, e books, periodicals and web resources were not hard to locate for this topic. Many if not all of these materials would be such a asset to our collection. While interviewing our teachers, I told our staff that I would try to purchase some of this material in 2012. I hope we can!
