Requirements differ from country to country Some key points of UK requirements

- Sufficient strength, rigidity and stability - Not able to be accidentally displaced - At least 24 (600 mm) wide and sufficient room to allow free
passage of persons and materials No gaps through which persons or materials could fall Handholds and footholds to prevent slips & trips Not loaded to cause danger of collapse or deformation

Scaffold Precautions

Damaged or defective parts of the scaffold could affect the integrity of the whole scaffold;
The defective parts must be

replaced, repaired or the scaffold removed from service.

Dont intermix scaffold parts from different manufacturers. Scaffolds must be erected, moved and/or altered by a qualified person.

Foundation - Ground must be level, sound and able to support the scaffold - Never use cinder blocks, gravel, loose stones or soil for:
Leveling an uneven surface or Providing a foundation for the base plate

support board

Planks/wood components - sturdy Steel components - straight, no cracks Bolts/connections - good condition Avoid electrical power lines

Capable of supporting 4 times the maximum intended load (includes personnel, equipment and supplies) Designed by a qualified person Built and loaded according to the design

Platform Construction
Platform and walkway must be at least 18 inches (450mm) wide Wood planks should be 2 by 10 inches (50mm x 250mm) and stamped as scaffold plank grade Each end of the platform must be fixed or extend over the support by 6 inches (150 mm)

Platform Construction

If a platform is 10 feet (3 meters) or less in length, the end cannot extend over its support more than 12 inches (300 mm) When platforms are overlapped to create long platforms, the overlap must only occur over a support and must be at least 12 inches (300 mm)
