Means literally: Apartness Apartheid was a system of racial segregation that was enforced in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. Apartheid was designed to form a legal framework for continued economic and political dominance by people of European descent.

Legal discrimination on the basis of race Black natives were forced carry identification papers everywhere Papers determined where blacks could go wanted to keep them in only industrial parts for work! Blacks could not organize labor unions or political parties Intense violence and discrimination

In the early 1980s, the white government began to admit the need for change because of the following 3 reasons:
