SURFACE AREA

Surface Area of a Cube

The surface area of a cube is the sum of the

areas of its bases and the lateral faces.
Since the faces and the bases of a cube are
congruent, therefore, the surface area is equal
to 6 times the area of one the faces.

Surface Area = 6s2

s Lateral Face

base
Find the surface area of a cube with side 9 dm in
length.

SA = 6s2 9 dm
= 6(9)2
= 6(81)
= 486 dm2
Surface area of a Rectangular Prism
The surface area of a rectangular prism is the
sum of its lateral area and the areas of its
bases. The lateral area is the sum of the areas
of its lateral faces.

SA = lateral area
+ areas of bases
SA = LA + 2B face
base
Find the surface area of a rectangular prism with
the base length 6 cm, base width 5 cm and height
4 cm. 4cm

5 cm
6 cm
Find the lateral area
Side faces 2(4)(5) = 40 cm2
Front and back faces 2(6)(4) = 48 cm2
Lateral area = 88 cm2
Find the surface area of a rectangular prism with
the base length 6 cm, base width 5 cm and height
4 cm. 4cm

5 cm
6 cm
Find the area of the bases
Area of the base (2B) = 2(6)(5) = 60cm2
Use the formula
SA = LA + 2B
= 88cm2 + 60cm2
= 148 cm2
Surface Area of a Square Pyramid

The surface area of a

s square pyramid is the
sum of the lateral area
b and the are of the base.
Surface area = lateral area + area of base
SA = LA + B
1
Lateral area = n 2 bs where n = number of lateral faces
b = base of triangular face
s = slant height
Find the surface area of a square pyramid whose
base is 6 cm on a side and whose slant height is
10cm.
10 cm B = b2
= 62
=36 cm2
6 cm
SA = LA +B
1
LA = n 2 bs
= 120 cm2 + 36 cm2
= 4[1/2(6)(10)]
=120 cm2 = 156 cm2
Surface Area of a Cylinder

The top and bottom of a cylinder are its

circular bases with area π r2. If the top and
bottom parts of the cylinder are cut out, what
remains is a curved surface, which when
flatten out is a rectangle. The length of this
rectangle is the same as the circumference of
each base, & the width is the same as the
height of the cylinder.
r
2πr

SA = area of two circular bases + area of the

rectangle
SA = 2 πr2 + 2 πr h
* The area of the rectangle is the LA of the cylinder.
Find the total area of a cylinder with radius 4 m and a
height of 12 m. Use 3.14 for π & give the answer to the
nearest tenth.
LA = 2πrh
12 m = 2(3.14)(4)(12)
= 301.44 m2
4m
SA = 2πr2 + 2πrh
Base = 2πr2 =100.48 + 301.44
= 2(3.14)(4)2 = 401.92 m2
= 2(3.14)(16)
= 100.48 m2
Surface Area of a Cone

The total surface area of a cone is equal to π

times the radius squared plus π times the
radius times the slant height.
A= π r2 + π r s
A= π r (r + s)
Find the surface area of a cone with a radius of 6 cm
and a slant height of 10 cm. Use 3.14 for π and give
the answer to the nearest tenth.

A = π r( r + s)
10 cm
= 3.14(6) [(6 + 10)]
= 18.84 (16)
= 301.44 cm2

Surface Area of a Sphere

Archimedes (298 B.C. – 212 B.C.) was the greatest

mathematician of ancient times. In his book
On the Sphere and Cylinder, he wrote that the
area of a sphere is four times of that of a great
circle. The great circle is a circle on the sphere
whose center is also the center of the sphere.
The formula can be stated as follows:
The surface area of a sphere is four times the
area of a circle with the same radius. Hence,
SA = 4 π r2.
Find the surface area of a sphere with radius of 3
cm. Use 3.14 for π.

SA = 4 π r2
3 cm = 4 (3.14) (3)2
= 12.56 (9)
= 113.04 cm2
