A functional resume is suitable for anyone who
Wants to change their career. Wants to show off their transferable skills. Has noticeable gaps in their employment history.

education etc. Has changed jobs frequently. Has little practical work experience that is relevant to the job or industry that they are applying for. Is a student and has little or no work experience.

Summary of Qualifications
Listing an objective is old fashioned
Replace with summary of qualifications (personal

branding) What makes you the best person for the job? List the top four or five skills & qualifications here. Include skills mentioned in the job posting if applicable.

Objective Statement What do you see?

Seeking a challenging marketing position which will

enable me to improve my skills and make a positive contribution to your organization.

The problem with the above statement is that it

focuses too much on what YOU want, and too little on your skills. Informs employers what type of job you are seeking and does not inform about your expertise. Below is an example of a personal branding statement:

Innovative marketing strategist with 3 years of experience improving market share and increasing ROI.

Summary Qualifications
With a summary, the key is to pull out your most

relevant and impressive qualifications from throughout your career and highlight them where they can be appreciated at first glance Write this towards the end Use the right key words Beware of the Applicant Tracking System (ATS)

Relevant Coursework

Only if its related in some way to the job youre applying for List it as a subheading under EDUCATION Dont list everything and Dont list course numbers

Work Experience
This section is the single most important place to sell

yourself to a potential employer

With so many to read, employers often skim resumes,

looking for:
Key job titles Specific skills Relevant qualifications

Always use key words/phrases that clearly and briefly articulate your experiences

Work Experience
Stick to the What/Where/When format
The skills you include on your resume should be

connected to the skills required in the job you are seeking

Key Words
Conducted cross-functional management for initial

and follow-up contact. Coordinated marketing campaigns and special events. Managed customer database, product updates, and upgrades. Functioned in project-management role. Oversaw procurement, allocation, distribution control, stock levels, and cost compilation/analysis.

Key Words
For example, use both "manager" and "management;"

try both CRM and Customer Relationship Management. Good resume must be specifically tailored for each job you're applying to Don't forget about "soft skills," such as interpersonal and communications skills that relate to many types of jobs

Accomplishment Statements

Written proof of what you have accomplished (use

numbers if applicable) A success story from your past work experience Shows how you are unique or what value you can bring

HARD ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENT

Uses numbers, percentages and facts

E.g. Managed a team of six sales associates and increased store sales by 25% for the month of December

SOFT ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS

Uses words and descriptions

E.g. Implemented new employee training program that dramatically increased productivity and morale.

ACOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS
Increased reported customer satisfaction rate by 20% by providing effective training for more than 15 new employees in a six month period.

Best Better

Trained more than 15 new employees over a six month period resulting in increased customer satisfaction.

Good
Trained new employees resulting in increased customer satisfaction.

OK

Trained new

employees.

Good skill-related verbs

Widespread tendency to use dull verbs like assisted

or helped. Instead, translate your experience into active language. Use action verbs - collaborate, consolidate, convince, promote, publicize and persuade. As for tense, use the past unless your experience is ongoing, in which case you should use the simple present tense For m0re action verbs visit:

If you dont have work experience

Describe educational experiences such as internships,

practicum, class projects and even volunteer activities as if they were paid work experiences.
If you lack work experience related to your goal,

include your internships and practicum in your experience section. Give examples of actual assignments, challenges you faced, your contribution, and the results and benefits to the employer.

New Graduates
Instead of the standard objective, education,

experience and skills layout, you might want to compose a rsum that lists
skills and training at the top with bullet points

then list education

after that experience, with one line for each job.

Underneath that, you would include two-line descriptions of the work you performed in each job (volunteer positions, internships, leadership position, projects)

Things to Avoid
No kidding information:
Everyone knows that your references are available upon request, so

dont waste any space saying it. Available for interview do not include Relevant experience Age Hobbies Marital status No pictures Religion Lying No pronouns (I/me) Do not use a colored background, fancy fonts or images on your resume

Quick Tips for a Better Resume

Make your name stand out
Let your summary qualifications reflect the job youre

applying for Use headings and subheadings for organization Use What/Where/When format Put Education and Work Experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first) Use bullets to make your experiences stand out Proofread, proofread, proofread, proofread
