Emotion are an expression of feeling which show a readiness for action

That may mean that the individual continues with an action already started, or modifies it or even changes it

a) Basic emotions:

Joy
Anger Surprise Fear Interest Distress Disgust Sadness

Birth-6 month 7-11 years 7- 12 month

Age
3-6 years 1- 2 years

Birth-6 month

Shows sign of almost all emotion from birth

Begins to smile socially

Begins to laugh as an expression of happiness

Shows facial expressions of happiness with familiar carers.

7- 12 month

Anger and fear increases, especially in a situation with strangers

The child will avoid unfamiliar or uncomfortable situation

The child needs a secure base, provided by those who care for them

The child can become distressed or withdrawn in unstable situation

1- 2 years

Feelings of selfconsciousness appear but depends on the presence of others

Social smile appears

Is very dependent on adult

3- 6 years

They show more self-conscious emotions and these are clearly linked to self-esteem

They use their developing language to express emotion

They begin to conform in social contexts, even when this is against their emotions

7- 11 years

Feelings of selfconsciousness become integrated with inner standards for right action

Internal strategies for emotional selfregulation are evident and these can be adjusted to situations

Conformity to and conscious awareness of displays of emotion improve

Eriksan defined 8 stages of human emotional development from baby to adult. According to him, in every stage there will be +ve and ve attitudes that will lead to psychological adjustment problem due to the emotional conflict.
