Method
Velocity Test

Configure bow to launch rod at 50mph Shoot rod vertically down into tube against a rock Shoot rod horizontally into smaller tube against a rock

Method
Gradual Displacement Test

Apply force to contained rod until it is displaced a set amount of inches

Materials Description
Rods Guide Tubes

Steel
D: 0.125 in L: 48 in Pitch: 26.8 in

Plexiglass
OD: 4.75 in ID: 4.25 in L: 5 ft

Plastic Wood (poplar)

D: 0.25 in L: 48 in ID: 2 in L: 5 ft

Copper
ID: 0.5 in L: 8 ft

Calibration of bow
At 50mph (73.3 fps) rod should travel 41 ft ( =
Rod is at initial height of 60 in
2 )

To achieve this distance, bowstring pulled back 20-21 in Guide tube set up against a rock to simulate bottom of well or concrete shoe

Strain from Gradual Displacement test

Total Length: 48 in Compression 3, 4in Axial Strain
Compressed 3 in
3/48 = 0.0625

Compressed 4 in
4/48 = 0.0833

Test 3
Vertical Bow Test Guide Tube ID: 4.25 in Pull Length: 21 in Rod centered before being shot

Test 4
Vertical Bow Test Guide Tube ID: 4.25 in Pull Length: 21 in Rod rested on side of tube before being shot

Test 5

Bottom Rod

Test 6
Horizontal Bow Test Guide Tube ID: 0.5 in Pull Length: 21 in Worked on third trial

Test 7 - wood
Vertical Bow Test Guide Tube ID: 4.25 in Pull Length: 21 in Very high rebound Bow was not calibrated to shoot wood at 50mph so velocity may be different

Test 8
Horizontal Bow Test Guide Tube ID: 2 in Pull Length: 21 in Rod impacted rock

Test 9, 10-11
Gradual Force Test Guide Tube ID: 4.25 in Compression Length Test 9: 3in Tests 10-11: 4in Bent on side with changing force

Conclusions
Velocity Test Gradual Displacement Test

Whole rod buckles, bottom is permanently deformed while rest straightens out Test 6 had smallest radial clearance, could be accurate representation

Permanently deformed near top where force occurs

Due to friction force creating lockup
