Introduction

Curriculum has different meanings to different people.

It is based on a set of values and beliefs about what students should learn. It takes into account expected learning outcomes, associated learning and teaching tasks, assessment and evaluation. In modern parlance curriculum designing is known as constructive alignment. Constructive alignment is what we ask students to do 23/04/2009 must relate to what we want them to learn.

Thinking Curriculum
Process of constructing knowledge by linking intellectually stimulating content to real-world contexts. Inspires students self-motivated learning and equips them with cross-discipline skills in problem solving, self-monitoring, reading and study strategies and critical thinking. Inclusive course design anticipates a diversity of learning styles and abilities.

Curriculum designing
Top-down strategy or bottom-up process limitations and advantages.
The lacunae in the prescribed may be felt by teacher as well as learner. Teachers self-made course-ware as supplementary or complementary and can be collaborative work. Involvement of teacher desirable for professional growth and an important aspect of teacher expertise. 23/04/2009 6

Multimedia
Multimedia is combination of sound, graphics, animation, and video

with traditional media such as text. Multimedia provides the necessary optimal input and practice activities, and the classroom provides the human element where the language models come to life and are extended in a social context. (Knowles, 2004) Media materials can lend authenticity to the classroom situation, reinforcing for students the direct relation between the language classroom and the outside world. (Brinton, 2001) provides rich, authenticated and up-to-date materials and attractive and a friendly interface.

Classify and organize effectively and make choices to

suit the needs and accommodate students request.

Curriculum designing and multimedia

Multimedia provides variety in presenting and practicing new language. Motivation, element of choice, preferred learning style and safe environment.
Plenty of CD-ROM collections collection and assembly is not problem, but use of it is. Element of inflexibility most of CD-ROMs do not allow to create own exercises.

Internet and multimedia make enormous impact on language teaching and learning access to diverse resources.

Time consuming but plenty of resources and tremendous response from learners.
make a pool of resources and distribute selected e-text / video / audio materials. Assign the tasks of preparing the presentations.

Autonomous learning
Definition is that learning in which the learner, in conjunction with relevant others, can make the decisions necessary to meet the learners own learning needs. (Kesten).
Aim to make the learner to value learning for its own sake and an empowering activity of personal and social worth. Independent learning is a direction for the process of education that facilitates intellectual growth and demonstration of independent and reflective judgment of learners.

Autonomous learning

Important factor is the encouragement of students own interests and their desire to learn. Demands active participation and responsibility in learners.

Role of teacher, learner and head of organization.

Three important aspects of teachers role

--To create learning environment. --To establish harmonious relationship between teacher and learner. --The teaching and modeling skills needed for learners autonomy. 23/04/2009

18

Learning environment nurtures motivation, selfconfidence, curiosity and desire to learn.

Create a climate that is sensitive, flexible and responsive to learners needs. Atmosphere, environment and structure of the educational institution must support independent learning. Strong library programs encourage quality of inquiry.

19

Harmonious relationship between learner and teacher to develop increasing learner responsibility. Relinquish control of decision-making. Teachers organization, instructional techniques develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge of autonomous learning. Instructional techniques, strategies and approaches must be based on collaboration. Instructional approaches are a) Divergent thinking, b) Concept mapping, c) Journal writing, d) Learning centres, e) Inquiry process, f) Independent research and g) Student-teacher conferences.

Demonstrate how to learn independently, encourage, support and provide feedback with the role of a patient facilitator. Independent learning is a cyclical process learn a skill at one level, use the skill to learn other skills or content and repeat the cycle. Independent learning demands learners responsibility for their own learning.

Individual responsibility springs from the belief that learning can be affected by effort a critical factor leads to perseverance.
finally the environment created by school or college promotes the behaviour.

CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)

Great opportunity to make lessons effective and extensive. Programs are user-friendly. No intricacies of computers involved. Three skills are evaluated. Power point presentations or paper presentations provide oral tasks.

Conclusion
Curriculum through multimedia make learners more independent and provides improved motivation. Less live presentation of the factual material.

More advisory, consultative and corrective work with learners.

Selection of appropriate materials for various levels. Create environment to develop independent learning. Modern tools help effectively success depends on 23/04/2009 teachers and students in exploiting / exploring them. 23
