1. How to access to MGW

Serial Connection

Telnet
EMAS/Element Manager

Serial Connection
The GPBs have one (GPB3) or two (GPB2) serial (RS232, console) ports on their front plate for boot messages, and initial or emergency configuration. The serial port is connected to the connection frame on the rear side of the node, where its accessible through an RJ45 jack(. Set the connection of your terminal program (Kermit, Minicom, HyperTerm) to 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity (9600 8N1) no Handshake.

Telnet
There is a Ethernet port on the GPBs, which is accessible on the connection frame in the rear side of the node via a standard RJ45 connector. If configuration of the nodes IP address is done, MGW can be accessible thought the Ethernet port via Telnet. Be noted that your PCs IP address should be in the same subnet with MGWs IP address if you are connected to the Ethernet port directly. For example, the MGWs IP address is 192.168.1.135 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. You can configure you PCs IP as 192.168.1.132, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

EMAS/Element Manager
EMAS is the official tools for Media Gateway operation and maintenance, implemented through a Graphical User Interface(GUI).
Element Manager can be accessed using the HTTP protocol, via the Ethernet port. Be noted that you need to have the correct Java version in your PC in order to work on EMAS.

2. Handling of CV and Backup

CV Handling
Backup Handling

2005-09-23

GUC/N/M Benny Chen

CV Handling (1)
Creation of a CV means that a database backup of the current configuration is created. CV should be created before/after configuration change and software upgrade.

OPI: Create Configuration Version

Remove Configuration Version Loaded CV: The configuration version that system reloaded from last time. Executing CV: The configuration version that now running in system.
2005-09-23 GUC/N/M Benny Chen

CV Handling (2)
Startable CV: The startable CV is the CV that is loaded after the next node restart. OPI: Set Configuration Version to State Startable Rollback list: The "Rollback" configuration versions are those that will be loaded if for any reason the "Startable" configuration fails during reload. OPI: Add Configuration Version to Rollback List Move Configuration Version Position within Rollback List Remove Configuration Version from Rollback List

Backup Handling
Backup is to copy the files in hard disk of MGW into some external media. These backup files will be used for recovery of system in case the node cannot be restoring using normal O&M procedures. Backup should be made after system upgrade or large configuration change.

3. Alarm and Hardware handling

Alarm handling Event handling Log handling Subrack Tasks

Board type
Board handling
2005-09-23 GUC/N/M Benny Chen

Alarm handling
Alarm, Alarm log and Event log can be viewed in EMAS.
An alarm is always associated with an active or ceased state. Each alarm has a unique alarm identifier, which is set by system automatically.

All active alarms are kept in the nodes alarm list that can be viewed by the operator, corresponding OPI can be found in ALEX. User Guide for Fault Management Chapter 3.4, 7 Using the M-MGw Element Manager Graphical User Interface Chapter 3.1.4

Event handling

Events, on the other hand, can be regarded as stateless alarms. Once an event has been issued, no further action will take place. Events are typically used to provide the user with an indication of noteworthy situations, without necessarily requiring any action from the user.

Command Log handling (1)

The Command Log needs to be activated by scripts before it can be viewed.

The Command Log is located in /c/commandlog/ and the name of the file is cmdlogdata.dat.gz.

Statistics counters can be collected via OSS-RC application.
The logs are located in /c/public_html/cello/XML_files/, which can be transferred to PC via FTP. User Guide:

4. Command Line Interface/Useful Commands

2005-09-23

GUC/N/M Benny Chen

Command Line Interface (CLI)

CLI the administrative interface that an operator can use when configuring, managing, and maintaining a Cello-based network node.
The interface is provided by a set of shell commands which are handled by a UNIX shell-like command interpreter. When you access Media Gateway via serial connection or telnet, your input command will be handled by CLI. EMAS should be the preference for customers daily O&M. CLI should only be used when the task cannot be done via EMAS.

5. Interactive Message add/modify

2005-09-23

GUC/N/M Benny Chen

Interactive Message (1)

The Interactive Messaging (IM) function is a media stream function. It plays a message or a message composition towards a subscriber when a play request is received over the GCP protocol. A message file is a stand alone file which provides data for the playing of a message. The message shall be encoded in either 8 bit A-law PCM or 8 bit -law PCM depending on the node configuration.

Media Stream handling (MSB) functionality overview

The Media Stream Handling functions include basic functionality for supporting circuit-switched speech and data in WCDMA and GSM.

It enables Speech Coding (AMR), Tone Sender (TSR), Echo Cancellation, DTMF Sending and Receiving, Multi-Party Calls, Code Answer, Inactive messaging tools and etc.
These functions are implemented in specialized Media Stream handling devices on the Media Stream Boards.

6. Recovery of the node

1. Node Reload 2. Recovery Node with backup files

2005-09-23

GUC/N/M Benny Chen

Node Reload
Via EMAS:

OPI: Reload Configuration Version and Restart Node

Via Command Line Interface: When you are in Basic Mode:

$ restartObj me
When you are in Backup Mode: $ Reload

To know you are in Basic mode or in Backup mode:

$ vols -> if you see /c then you're in Basic mode, if you see /c2 then you're in Backup mode.

Recovery Node with backup files

It should be taken as the last resort and can only be applied in extreme situation to recover MGW with backup files.
