Need for Heat sinks

On state and switching losses develops heat Developed heat should be dissipated . Usually heat dissipation is through convection

Thermal Modeling for heat sink selection

TJ P( JC CS SA )

Selection of heat sink

The terms P, JC , CS are known from load conditions and device data sheet. Obtain the value of SA based on surrounding temperature. A heat sink which has an equivalent thermal resistance SA is chosen.

Classification of Heat sink

Most heat sinks are made from aluminum, because of its low thermal resistance, light weight. Heat sinks can be classified based on Manufacturing methods & final form shapes

Classifications of Heat sinks

Extruded Stamped Bonded Folded fin Single fin Assembly Swaged Forged Skived

Stamped types
Copper or aluminum sheets stamped into desired shapes
It is made from a single sheet of metal, which is cut and bent to give the desired thermal properties.

low power application

Extruded type
Allows for the formation of elaborate 2-D shapes capable of dissipating large heat loads Design limits are usually set by
Fin height-to-gap aspect ratio Minimum fin thickness-toheight

They are cost effective and provide good thermal performance.

Bonded type
Thermally conductive aluminum filled epoxy is used to bond planar fins on a grooved extrusion plate Greater fin height-to-gap aspect ratio is achieved with this method (~20-40) Cooling capacity is increased without increasing volume requirements

Folded fin type

Aluminum or copper sheet metal is folded into fins and then attached to a base plate or directly to the heat surface via brazing or epoxying Allows for the fabrication of high performance heat sinks when extrusion or bonded fins are unacceptable

Forged type
Heated metal is compressed into a form mould to the desired shape.

Swaged type
Individual fins are placed in a pre-grooved base and then a roller or punch will swage the sides to the fins. High power applications.

Skived type
Fins are skived from a solid piece of material, usually copper.

Range of Heat Transfer Efficiency

Heat sink Types
Stampings Extrusion Fully Ducted Extrusion Ducted fin, Bonded & Folded fins

Efficiency(h)
