RESPONSE TO PERIODIC EXCITATION: REAL FOURIER SERIES

DEFINITIONS

Period(T) is the time to complete one cycle of motion. It is measured in seconds. Frequency(F) is the number of cycles per second. It is measured in Hz (1cycle/second). It could be also measured in radians/second. f = (1/T) = (2/T) radians/s T=(2 /)

Amplitude(A) is the maximum displacement from the equilibrium position

If the motion is repeated after equal intervals of time, it is called periodic motion. The simplest type of periodic motion is harmonic motion.

is the damping ratio or fraction of critical damping and the damping constant c is a measure of the energy dissipated in a cycle of free vibration or in a cycle of forced harmonic vibration

DAMPING RATIO

the system oscillates about its equilibrium position with a progressively decreasing amplitude. the system returns to its equilibrium position without oscillating. again the system does not oscillate and returns to its equilibrium position, as in the = 1 case, but at a slower rate.

RESPONSE TO PERIODIC EXCITATION: REAL FOURIER SERIES

Forces acting on structures are frequently periodic, or can be approximated closely by periodic forces. For example, the forces exerted on an automobile traveling at constant speed over certain roadway surfaces can be considered to be periodic. Figure shows a periodic function with period T1, that is, p(t + T1) = p(t)

A periodic function can be separated into its harmonic components by means of a Fourier series expansion. In this section we consider real Fourier series.

FOURIER SERIES

Periodic signals can be decomposed into an infinite series of trigonometric functions, called Fourier series. The period of the signal is T and the corresponding fundamental frequency is = (2/T) Now, the periodic signal x(t) can be represented as follows

FOURIER SERIES

The Fourier-coefficients a0, ak and b must be determined. They describe how strong the corresponding trigonometric function is present in the signal x(t). The coefficient a0 is the double mean value of the signal in the interval 0T:
k

and represents the off-set of the signal. The other coefficients can be determined from

Let us use once more the single dof oscillator but now the force is a periodic function which can be represented by a Fourier series

The Fck and Fsk are the Fourier coefficients. The response due to such an excitation;
