    Pansitopenia is defined as a reduction in all three types of peripheral blood cells - red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which causes anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. Common causes of pancytopenia include aplastic anemia, bone marrow infiltration or replacement by cancer cells, viral infections, and exposure to toxic chemicals. Different types of myelodysplastic syndrome are classified based on the percentage of blasts in the bone marrow and peripheral blood, presence of Auer rods, monocyte count, and percentage of ringed sideroblasts.

    Cytopenia is a reduction in the number of each type of peripheral blood cell. A reduction in all 3 types of cellular components in peripheral blood is termed pancytopenia and this involves anaemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia.
