What managers DO ?
Managers have to manage various forces & they are responsible for managing that. OB FORCES :-Things that responsible for OB that affects the whole organization.
People :- Individual, Groups, NGOs, Govt. Body, Institution Structure :- Formal relation for use of people Technology :- Requirement of today's world Smoother & Luxury of task Environment :- Internal External

Management Functions
According to French industrialist Henry Fayol 5 basic management functions that each management has to follow plan, organize ,command , co-ordinate, control, but now a days basic 4 functions are condense.

Planning :-

Step by step process to achieve goal on time.

:- Future activity having ideas path & goals

Organizing :- Holding person/employees for high


performance standards.

Leading :- Guide, Motivate, Direct Coordinating: Controlling:- Analyze & Monitor, corrective measures

Management Roles
In 1960s, a graduate student at MIT, Henry Mintzberg analyze activities of five executives and determine what they did on their job.

1. Interpersonal Roles :

Roles that are ceremonial ,formal , representative and symbolic in nature. Figurehead :-Symbolic head to perform a number of routine activities. i.e. Industrial instructor, supervisor
Leader :- Related to employees in terms of hiring, training, grouping motivating . Liaison :- Who shares information with Insider\ outsider with the help of Networking.

Management Roles
2.Informational Roles : Monitor :Exchanging ideas, knowledge for the health &benefit of the organization.
Collect variety of information form internal as well as external environment regarding customer, competitor, changes.

Disseminator

:- Transfer required information from outside to inside i.e. Internet, Journals Magazines, other employees.
Spoke to outsider about company's policy, actions ,results, i.e. Investor, Banker, Creditor, Customer

3. Decisional Roles : Entrepreneur :A crucial and important role regarding taking decisions by creating, analyzing, situation/choices.
Seeking opportunity, think / plan for it,, implement ,analyzing action & control.

Disturbance Handler : Resource Allocator :-

Create such an environment so that activity done smoothly with out interruptions & the situations like strikes, lockouts or quarrels do not happen.
Allocate all resources of factor of production so that maximum possible out put can be gained. i.e. Human , monetary, Technical resources. their own unit.

Neonator:- Represent Organization to gain advantage for

Management has to get the things done through other people so skills required to perform task & smoothly running of an organization. According to Robert Katz basic and essential skills are as under ;

individuals act within the organization and try to identify ways in which people act more effectively &efficiently .

OB try to manage complex set of forces i.e. people, structure , technology,& environment.

> OB is an applied behavioral science that is built on
contributions from a number of behavioral disciplines.

PHYCHOLOGY:

psychology is the science that seeks to measure , explain and sometimes change the behavior of humans and other animals. It is study to understand individual behavior.

SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY :
>
social psychology blends concepts from both psychology and sociology, though it is generally considered a branch of psychology. It because of peoples influence on one another. It is a study of group behavior, power and conflict.

SOCIOLOGY :
> It studies people in relation to their social environment or
culture. Study of group behavior in organizations.

ANTHROPOLOGY:
> It is the study of societies to learn about human beings and
their activities. e.g :- our current understanding of difference between

rational culture.

Major challenges and opportunities for managers to use OB concept.


There are a lot of challenges and opportunities today for manager to use concepts.

A) Responding to globalization :
Organizations are no longer constrained by national borders. For example ford car plant in brazil here the managers job is changing. 1) Increased Foreign Assignments. 2) Working with People from Different Cultures. 3) Overseeing Movement of jobs to Countries with lowcost labor. 4) Managing People During the war on terror.

B) Managing workforce diversity > One of the most important and


broad-based challenges currently facing organizations is adapting to people who are different.

> It means that organizations are becoming amore heterogeneous


mix of people in terms of gender, age, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.

C) Improving Quality & Productivity.

>In the 1990s, organizations around the world added capacity in


response to increased demand. The result? Today every industry suffers excess supply.
