SUPPORT SYSTEM IN PLANTS

Supports system in plants are divided by two :

Plants

Land

Aquatic

Woody

Non-woody

SUPPORT SYSTEM OF LAND PLANTS

Woody plants Woody plant are supported by woody tissue. Woody tissue is hard and gives the plant shape and provides it with stregth to hold itself upright. Woody plant are also supported by special structures such as Butress Root and Stilt Root.

mangrove

Examples of woody plants are angsana trees, durian trees, rose plants, mangrove trees, pine trees and flame of the forest.

SUPPORT SYSTEM OF LAND PLANTS

Non-woody plants Non-woody plants have two types of supported systems which are : a) Herbaceous plants which are supported by turgrid pressure and special structures such as props root or tendrils. b) Non-woody plants (herbs) such as balsam and mustard are supported by cell turgidity.

Examples of Herbaceous or non-woody plants are balsam plants, tomato plants, paddy plants, banana trees and grass.

Support system of aquatic plants

1.Examples of aquatic plants are hydrilla, vallis neria, lotus, and water lily. 2. (a) Aquatic plants stand erect in water because they are supported by the upthrust of the water (buoyancy of water). (b) This can be demonstrated by the activity below.

3. The stem of an aquatic plant is filled with air spaces, which make the plant very light for its volume. 4. The upthrust of the water on the plant is greater than the weight of the plant itself.

5. Other characteristic of aquatic plants include the following: (a) They have little strengthening tissue as water give them buoyancy. (b) They have finely-divided leaves in order to offer little resistance to water currents. (c) They have very few roots to absorb water as water is everywhere. (d) Aquatic plants which float on water have very large leaves. e.g: lotus and water lily

HYDRILLA
Hydrilla is a submerged aquatic plant.

The buoyancy of water keeps Hydrilla upright in water. Hydrilla has small leaves and soft stem that do not resist water flow.
This helps the leaves to avoid being damaged by running water.

WATER HYACINTH
Water hyacinth is a free-floating aquatic plant. The air sacs in the leaf stalks of water hyacinth help the plant to float on the surface of water.

LOTUS

The air spaces in the stem and the leaves of the lotus plant help the plant to keep its leaves and flower afloat.

Air Sac

The brown alga is common on rocky shores. It is alternately exposed and covered by the tides every day. This alga has air sacs for support because the air sacs provide buoyancy
