Multiplay Network :- The Multiplay network is a three tier Architecture consisting of the Access Network, Aggregation Network and Core & Content Delivery Network.

7-Jan-14

RTTC Jaipur - HKT

29

Access Network
It contains the DSLAMs of various port capacities aggregating the CPEs (ADSL/VDSL). These DSLAMs are then aggregated to Ethernet LAN switches (Tier II / TierI) either by DARK fiber on GE (If the distance is less than 20 Kms) or by a transmission systems viz. STM-16/STM1 if the distance is above 20 Kms. The DSLAMs functions similar to the ones working in the existing network and the interface is GE towards the Ethernet LAN switches.

Aggregation Network The aggregation networks uses the Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology switches for aggregation of access nodes (DSLAMs) and these switches are then aggregated to Broadband Network Gateway(BNG) in bigger cities which come under the classification of A1/A2/A3/A4/B1/B2 category. For cities doesnt fall A/B categories ,OC LAN switch is deployed as Tier-2 Network Device in the Multi Play network connecting the Tier-1 RPR to DSLAM in other cities.
7-Jan-14 RTTC Jaipur - HKT 30

DSLAM
The DSLAMs are collocated with existing PSTN exchanges, which provide last mile access to customers over copper wire up to average span lengths of 3 kms. The density of DSLAM will vary from 64Port to 960 Ports. The 64 P DSLAM will have one GE uplink interface. The 120P, 240P and 480P DSLAM will have 1+1 GE uplink interface. The 960P DSLAM will have 2+2 GE uplink interface.
7-Jan-14 RTTC Jaipur - HKT 31

Aggregation Network:In the Broadband Multi-Play network, slight modification has been done in the architecture to ensure increased network resiliency, effective bandwidth management and better fibre management.

A) Connectivity Between DSLAM & RPR T-2

The DSLAMs will be aggregated to RPR Tier 2 Switch on Gigabit Ethernet interface on dark fibre. Except 64P DSLAM, all other DSLAMs will have redundant connectivity to the same RPR Tier 2 switch/ L2PE through two different paths. The maximum driving distance between DSLAMs and RPR Tier 2 Switch / L2PE is 20k.m.
"Resilience is the ability of the network to provide and maintain an acceptable level of service in the face of various faults and challenges to normal operation.
7-Jan-14 RTTC Jaipur - HKT 32

B) Connectivity Between RPR T-2 & RPR T-1

RPR Tier2 Switch shall be connected to RPR Tier1 Switch aggregators by optical n x GE or 10 GE links as per traffic requirement. Maximum driving distance between RPR Tier 2 and RPR Tier 1 aggregator is 40 k.m. The number of nodes planned in a ring will vary from four to six. In case of A type cities the aggregation of RPR Tier 2 Switch will be over 10 GE. For B1 and B2 cities the aggregation will be through GE.

33

Broadband Network Gateway (BNG)

This is equivalent to Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) of NIB-II with some added functionalities, which makes it aware of the potential congestion point in the aggregation network. This is the most critical point of the network in terms of guaranteeing the Quality of Service and to avoid congestion as it keeps tracks of the various traffic flows of each type and take appropriate decisions based on the resources available (bandwidth, sessions) and also do resource admission, subscriber authentication, IP address allotment and policing.
7-Jan-14 RTTC Jaipur - HKT 34

Layer-3 MPLS PE Router

This is used for aggregating traffic from multiple BNG and converting it from IP to MPLS. It also stores the VPN profile of the VPN customers and continuously updates through MP-BGP (Multi Protocol Border Gateway Protocol) with other PE (Provider Edge) Routers.
It further hands over the traffic to NIB-II Core. In case of A1, A2 and A3 cities, separate L3PE Router will be deployed for taking care of broadband Multi-Play requirement. In other cities, the existing NIB-II MPLS PE router will also act as L3PE router for broadband Multi-Play.
7-Jan-14 RTTC Jaipur - HKT 35

Network Connectivity
In Broadband MultiPlay Network, a total of 107 Broadband Aggregation Points (BAP) is defined . Each BAP consist of atleast one RPR Tier 1 aggregator, one BNG and one L3PE.

The set of RPR Tier 1 aggregator and BNG, for cities classified as Broadband Aggregation Point, is referred as Metro Aggregation Unit (MAU). Each MAU will cater to roughly around 40000 DSL ports. Aggregation Architecture for A1 and A2 cities

Each A1 & A2 cities will have 2-L3PE Routers deployed geographically at two different locations, collocated with transmission centres. Each L3PE Routers will aggregate four BNGs + four RPR Tier 1 aggregators and two BNGs + two RPR Tier 1 aggregator, respectively. These units will all be collocated. Each RPR Tier 1 aggregator will aggregate multiple RPR Tier 2 on 10GE ring on dark fibre. One of the L3PE Router along with associated BNG and RPR Tier1 Switch aggregator will be collocated with existing NIB-II Core Router. The second L3PE Router along with associated BNG and RPR Tier-1 Switch aggregator will be deployed in a geographically different location, collocated with the transmission centre. The RPR Tier 2 will be aggregating multiple DSLAMs.
7-Jan-14 RTTC Jaipur - HKT 38

Each RPR Tier 1 aggregator shall be mapped to RPR Tier 2 for aggregation of traffic. The mapping shall be done in such a fashion that total aggregated ports in a particular ring getting terminated in RPR Tier 1 aggregator shall be around 40000. Provision of dark fibre (one pair) between mapped RPR Tier 2 and RPR Tier 1 aggregator, in a ring fashion. The distance between the RPR Tier 1 Switch Aggregator and RPR Tier 2 can be maximum of 40 K.M

The RPR Tier 1 aggregator will be connected to BNG on multiple GE interface which in turn will be connected to L3PE Router.

The number of ports requirement in RPR Tier 2 Switch can be calculated using the following formulae:960 P DSLAM requires four Gigabit Ethernet Interface (GE) 480 P, 240P and 120P DSLAM require two GE Interface 64 P DSLAM requires one GE Interface Each RPR Tier 2 Switch requires two number of RPR interface for connecting to RPR Tier 1 aggregators. This interface is 10GE for A1, A2, A3 & A4 cities and 1GE for B1 and B2 cities. In case of OC type cities, one FE is required for interconnecting T-2 LAN Switch in OC type city to nearest RPR T-1 Switch aggregator. Four GE ports be kept as spare / maintenance in each RPR Tier 2.
7-Jan-14 RTTC Jaipur - HKT 52

So, for example if a particular RPR T-2 Switch in say A1 city aggregates five 960 port DSLAM, five 480 port DSLAM, four 240 port DSLAM, and two 120 port DSLAM, then the total port requirement for this aggregation comes to:-

Gigabit Ethernet = 5*4 + 5*2 + 4*2 + 2*2 +4 (spare) = 46

This is within the port planned for RPR Tier 2 Switch in A1 city (48 GE). Hence it is OK.
