(And we have made your sleep as a thing for rest) It is expected and required from a Muslim to observe some manners in which a Muslim will be rewarded fully by Allah for his observance and complying with laws and customs of the Prophet (may Allahs peace and blessing be upon time)

SECURING THE HOUSE BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP

Before retreating to bed, one should close and lock the doors and extinguish the fire and lamps in the home. Jaabir Ibn Abdullah related that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said, At right when you go to sleep, extinguish the lamp and close (lock) the door.. Related by Bukhaaree 6296, Muslim 2012 and others in another narration the Prophet (S.A.W) Said close the doors and extinguish the lamps for a mouse might drag the wick and set fire upon the people of the house. (Related by Poukhaaree 6259) And yet in another narration, Ibn Umar related that the Prophet (S.A.W) Said, Do not leave the fire (to burn) in your homes when you go to sleep. (Related by Bukhaaree 6293, Muslim 2015 and others). According to Ibn Daqee Al-Eed said, In closing and locking the doors to ones home, one achieves benefit both of the worldly tree and religious kind: his life and wealth are protected from evildoers and he is protected from shaytaan.

PERFORMING ABLUTION BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP

It is recommended and not obligatory to perform ablution before going to sleep. Al Baraa Ibn Aazib reported that the Prophet (S.A.W) Said, Whey you go to your bed (to sleep) then perform the same ablution that you perform for prayer.. (Related by Bukhaarec 247, Muslim 2710, Ahmad 18114, At Termidhee 3574, and Abu Daawood 5045). Ibn Hajar said: The apparent meaning is that it is mustahabit for everyone who wants to go to sleep to renew his wudhii, even if he already has wudhii An Nawawee said; if a person has wudhii, that is sufficient for him, because the point is to go to sleep having wudhii, lest he die in his sleep, and so that his dreams will be more, true, and so that the shaytaan will be less likely to play with his dreams and terrify him.

DUSTING ONES BED BEFORE LYING DOWN IN IT

It is from the Prophets (S.A.W) Sunnah that, before lying down on his bed to go to sleep, he would dust his mattress with the side of his lower garment three times . Abu Hurairab narrated that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) Said, When one of the you goes to his bed, led him dust off his bed with the inside of his lower garment, for he does not know what came on to it after he left it (the last time) . (Related by Bukhaaree 6320, Muslim 2714 and others with different wordings) Muslim related the hadeeth with this wording: then let him take his lower garment, and with it, dust off his bed, and let him mention Allahs Name for indeed, he does not know what came on his bed after he last left it. An Nawawee said in Sharh Muslim: The inside of his lower garment mean its edge. What is meant is that it is mustahabb to dust down ones bed before lying on it, last there be a snake or scorpion or that harmful thing in it. And one should dust it down with ones hand covered by the edge of his lower garment, last something bad happens to his hand if there is anything there.

RECITATION OF SOME VERSES FROM THE GLORIOUS QURAN BEFORE SLEEPING

It was from the Prophets (S.A.W) guidance that he would not go to sleep until he had read something from the Quran. When one practices this Sannah, he is protecting him self from shaytaan and as such his dreams became truer in their meaning. So the following are the Surahs and Ayats that Prophets used to recite before sleeping. 1. Recitation of Aayatul-Qursee (the verse of the throne) Baqarah 2:255) In a lengthy narration Abu Hurairah related that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) appointed him to guard the Zakaah wealth; on three consecutive nights, he caught a thief stealing from this wealth. And at the end of the hadeeth He (the thief) Said: When you go to your bed, recite Aayat AlQursee, for there will remain with you a guardian from Allah, and no devil will approach you, until morning comes. The Prophet (S.A.W) Said ( about this statement): He told you the truth although he is a liar. That was shaytaan.(it is a Muallaq report related by Bukhaaree 2311, refer to Fathul-Baaree 4:569

2. Soorah Al-lkhlaas and Al-Muawwadhatayn (i.e., the last three soorahs of the Quran). It was narrated from Aashah that when the Prophet (S.A.W) went to bed every night, he would hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite into them Qul. Huwa. Allah, Qul aoodhu bi rabbil-falaq and Qul. Aoodhu bi rabbin-nass. Then he would wipe them over whatever. He could of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times (Narrated by al- Bakhaari 5017) 3. Reciting soorah Tabaarak and Alif Laam-Meem, Tanzeelu-AsSajdah. 4. Recitation of last the verses from soorah Al-Baqarah 5. Reading certain supplication and invocation. Hafusoo,The wife of the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said, when he (the Prophet (S.A.W) wanted to sleep he would place his right hand underneath his hies,

after which he would say this prayer three times.
