At What Level of Trust do People No Longer Feel Confident in Allowing a Machine Perform a Task in Lieu of a Human Being

Shelby Fisher- Garibay Chase Waggener Layton Funk

How much do you trust a robot?

The experiment was designed to gage how much trust was placed in a robot, using the trust placed in a human as the baseline, in scenarios of varying consequence.

Scenarios-based on a scale of 1-10

1) You have an assortment of appointments and social activities going on. In order to keep things organized, you decide to keep a calendar. Rather than do this for yourself, you are going to have the calendar organized for you. 2) You go the PCL to study, but have to leave for five minutes and need to ask somebody to watch your things. You have with you a few school notebooks, a backpack and an expensive textbook. 3) You need to take a quick, ten minute drive to a nearby location. You have plenty of time to get there, but are unable to drive yourself, to get there; you decide to hire a chauffeur.

4) You are being tried for a crime and have taken the case to trial. Should you lose, you will spend up to 25 years in jail. You need a lawyer to defend you.
5) You need heart surgery to save your life, without it you will die.

Hypotheses
1)People are willing to trust robots equally only in situations of little significance. 2)People are willing to trust robots equally in situations where their belongings are at risk

3)People are willing to trust robots equally in situations that have remote risks of harm (automobiles)
4)People are willing to trust robots equally in situations that have fair risks of harm (Judicial) 5)People are willing to trust robots equally in situations that have significant risks of harm (Surgery)

Discussion

Discussion
Why not let a robot be your lawyer? Why trust a robot as your surgeon? Which is more important?

Conclusion
Our test was not conclusive in demonstrating at which point humans are more trusted The severity of our situations was not directly correlated to the amount of trust given Alternate tests could be run that would be more conclusive
