On July 7th 1896, the Lumiere Brothers showcased six films at the Watson Hotel in Mumbai and this

marked the birth of Indian cinema as we know it today. The screening of the films took place on July 7th 1896 at the Watson Hotel in Mumbai and the ticket was priced at Rs 1. The first film released in India was Sree Pundalik a silent Marathi film by Dadasaheb Torne on May 18th 1912. Indias very first talkie (that is the first talking film) was Alam Ara made by Ardeshir Irani which was released on March 14th 1931.

The history of film began in the late 1880s with the invention of the first movie camera. Motion pictures were initially exhibited as a carnival novelty and developed to one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment, and mass media in the 20th century and into the 21st century. Most films before 1930 were silent. Motion picture films have substantially affected the arts, technology, and politics. The movie theatre was considered a cheaper, simpler way to provide entertainment to the masses. Movies became the most popular visual art form of the late Victorian age. Indian film industry reached overall revenues of $1.86 billion (Rs 93 billion) in 2011. This is projected rise to $3 billion (Rs 150 billion) in 2016.

Indian Cinema has had a profound effect on cinema across India since the early 20th century. he cinema as a medium gained popularity in the country as many as 1,000 films in various languages of India were produced annually. In the 20th century, Indian cinema, along with the Bollywood film industries, became a global enterprise. At the end of 2010 it was reported that in terms of annual film output, India ranks first, followed by Bollywood .

"Guide" went on to win Filmfare Awards in five other categories including 'Best Film' and 'Best Director' and was sent as India's entry for the Oscars in the foreign film category that year. He co-produced the English Version of "Guide" with the Nobel Laureate Pearl S. Buck ("The Good Earth").

Dilip S Kumar (born 11 December 1922, as Muhammad Yusuf Khan) is an Indian film actor known as Tragedy King, and described as "the ultimate method actor" by Satyajit Ray. He debuted as an actor in the film Jwar Bhata in 1944 produced by BombayTalkies. His career has spanned over six decades and with over 60 films. He starred in films of a variety of genres such as the romantic Andaz(1949), the swashbuckling Aan(1952), the dramatic Devdas(1955), the comical Azaad(1955), the historical Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and the social Ganga Jamuna (1961).In 1976, Dilip Kumar took a five-year break from film performances and returned with a character role in the film Kranti(1981) and continued his career playing character roles in films such as Shakti (1982). His last film was Qila (1998).

Hema Malini (Born 16 October 1948) is an Indian actress, director and producer, Bharatanatyam dancer-choreographer, a politician. Making her acting debut in Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968), she went on to appear in numerous Bollywood films, most notably those with actor and future-husband Dharmendra and with Rajesh Khanna.Malini was initially promoted as "Dream Girl", and in 1977 starred in a film of the same name During this period, she established herself as one of Hindi cinema's leading actresses, noted for both her comic and dramatic roles, her beauty, and her accomplished classical dancing.

Nargis Dutt(June 1929 3 May 1981), born Fatima Rashid but known by her screen name, Nargis,was an Indian film actress. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the history of Hindi cinema. She made her screen debut as a child in Talash-E-Haq in 1935, but her acting career began in 1942 with Tamanna. During a career that spanned from the 1940s to the 60s, Nargis appeared in numerous commercially successful as well as critically appreciated films, many of which featured her alongside actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor.
