Blocking Everything is Not the Answer

Australian Institute of Criminology reported :

Actions such as banning student use of personal

technologies while at school have been found to reduce the chances students will report cyber bullying for fear of having their mobile phones or laptops confiscated.
(Canberra: Australian Institute of Criminology, February 2010)

Old security technologies no longer work Anonymous Web Proxies are easy to setup Kids have 3 weapons - time, willingness & skills

Reporting After the Fact May Be Too Late

Incidents of self harm require immediate

attention Perpetrators may come from outside the school Teens seek answers and often reach out via social media Technology can help guide them 24x7 when there is no-one else there to help

Education is Essential But Not Enough

Children still need guidance
The dangers can be perplexing for adults let alone children Perceived anonymity creates new problems not seen in the

playground Education is more effective with monitoring and reminders

Its Not About Chasing the Bad Guys

Helping the victim is the primary goal
Good kids can get into bad situations

Most will suffer in silence

Monitoring allows proactivity without waiting

for the victim to report it (90% wont)

Dealing with the problem early stops it

escalating (and keeps it off the front page)
