Capgemini is a consultancy business This means it works for clients on their problems or challenges For example, clients might ask Capgemini to help them grow faster and be more efficient Clients want to work with Capgemini because the company helps them come up with new ways of doing things, find new opportunities and stay ahead of competitors by using technology and outsourcing

What is a smart city?

What do you think we mean by a smart city? The Department for Business Innovation & Skills has defined a smart city as:
A smart city uses intelligent technology to enhance our quality

of life in urban environments...cities use data in a variety of ways: to save money, minimise waste, measure domestic water
usage and manage transport routes

In order to be smart, a city needs to use data and technology to improve things for citizens
Why do we need smart cities?

We need smart cities because cities are facing lots of challenges today What do you think some of the main challenges are? Increasing population 80% of UK population live in cities Pressure on transport & housing
The scale of the challenge is Climate change forcing cities to innovate in order to maintain service Reducing energy resources levels
Shift to online affecting High Street Aging population with increased social & health care spending Reductions in budget for local government who run cities

You are now all Capgemini consultants working with Boris Johnson & Londons leaders They have asked you to come up with new & innovative ideas to help them improve how the city operates We want to know how you would use technology to make London run smarter How can you help them using technology & smart ideas?
The challenges are huge how can I make London a smart city?
Think about how you can make citizens lives easier this is a city for the future so be inventive

Boston Citizens Connect app easy way for citizens to report problems to government Street Bump mobile app that provides government with real time information as citizens drive to help plan long-term investments Adopt-A-Hydrant a pilot project to encourage Boston residents to shovel out snowed-in hydrants during winter residents claim hydrants that they will shovel out after storms 21st Century Learning a number of apps including wheres my school bus? and Class Talk

Chicago Broadband Project investing in a new fibre optic ring Stockholm Royal Seaport a new development that will be carbon neutral by 2030 using technology & smart grid so different houses provide electricity at different times of the day & are very energy efficient

Presentation time
You are going to give a 5 minute presentation to Boris Johnson about how to make London run smarter You have to work as a team to present new & innovative ways to help Boris improve how London operates Write a presentation setting out how you can help him using technology & smart ideas
Hints
1. Make sure you give at least one idea for smarter services, government, people & environment 2. explain how this will make citizens lives easier 3. Use words pictures and diagrams as you prefer 4. Neatly present your ideas on paper 5. Remember that Capgemini value creativity & innovation 6. Get ready to present to the group!
Tips on presenting
A key part of Capgeminis work is built around good communication skills They have to convey their ideas and solutions to clients clearly and effectively Learning how to present well is important now and in the future
Dont worry!! Presenting to a crowd is difficult for most people but it is a vital skill and one that you can work on. Confidence is like a muscle... the more you work it out the bigger it gets!

You will need 5 A-C GCSEs, and 3 A-C A Level or the equivalent. You will start off by working towards gaining academic qualifications for a Level 4 Diploma for IT Professionals, whilst working for top name clients with real projects. We have a 13 week Accelerated Learning programme to take you from the class room to the world of work interpersonal, technical, commercial & professional skills. Capgemini will sponsor your BSc degree so not only will it be a debt free degree, but the skills you gain will be those in demand by business. Of course youll be working directly with clients so lots of relevant work experience too! Plus the chance to travel the UK and globally. Its a five year programme continuing into a permanent role in Capgemini Roles available in Software Engineering, Testing & Business Analysis Total package: 10,000 (rising to 16,000 after initial 13 weeks training)
Graduate Programmes
You will need to be a graduate with a minimum 2.1 degree You will be part of a structured 2-year programme, giving you client facing projects very early on. Our training programme will improve your personal skills including leadership, presentation and team working. We will continue to invest in your business and technical skills Salary and benefits competitive in the graduate market How long is it? 18 24 months continuing into a permanent role with Capgemini Two programmes: Technology or Management Consulting
