Importance of a Cover Letter


A good cover letter indicates your ability to communicate with others. According to Arlene Vernon, "It allows you to talk in your own voice, link your experiences to the specific job opening, share your special abilities and show that you can write cohesively and effectively, which is important in any job."

APPLICATION LETTER WRITING TIPS


What should be in the application letter?
The first paragraph of the application letter states which position you are applying for and where you received this information. (ADDRESS) Dear Mr. Smith (STATEMENT) This letter is in response to your advertisement for a Structural Engineer, which appeared in the Sun Star Daily last Sunday, March 3, 2013.

The next paragraph should give a brief statement on your qualifications.

(EXPERIENCE) I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cebu. I have undergone 360 hours of internship at Primary Sructures under the supervision of Mr. Benedict Cruz. In my stint with Primary Structures, I was trained intensively on the areas such as planning, design and operation of buildings, bridges and construction materials.

Your next statement and paragraph should include your desire for the position and a commitment to contact them to arrange for a personal interview.

(DESIRE & COMMITMENT) I feel my skills, background and desire make me a perfect match for the position. My resume, alone, cannot fully explain all of my accomplishments and qualifications, therefore, I would appreciate the opportunity to explain in person how I can benefit (COMPANYS NAME). You should close with a THANK YOU and your anticipation of the interview. For example:

use a clean sheet of short sized bond paper. choose a standard size professional font such as Times New Roman or Arial in 11 or 12 point size use bullets, sections headings or related indicators to help readers easily focus on specific elements of your resume. always leave at least a one inch margin on all sides. limit resume to 1 or 2 pages.

What is an Interview?
It is a process in which a potential employee is evaluated by an employer for prospective employment in their company, organization or firm. It is the only thing standing between you and the position of your choice. Therefore, the interviewer needs to ask you questions that will answer the questions: Who are you? Can you do the job? Will you do the job? Will you fit in? How much will you costs?

Elements of a Successful Interview


BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
Know yourself. Know the company. Practice answering common interview questions. Consider doing a mock interview with a friend. Prepare a list of 3-4 questions to ask an employer.

DURING THE INTERVIEW


Make sure you arrive a few minutes early. Greet the interviewer by name. Offer a firm handshake and warm smile. Maintain eye contact. Be aware of nonverbal communication. When making assertions about yourself, offer examples from past positions that validate your claims. Answer questions as truthfully as you can.

My long term goals involve growing with a company where I can continue to learn, take on additional responsibilities, and contribute as much of value as I can. DRESS FOR SUCCESS


Dress conservatively to play it safe. For ladies, wear a crisp blazer and slack or a decent skirt. Use natural looking make-up and clear nail polish. Wear conservative heeled shoes. Add accessories to express your personality and accentuate your best features. Do not carry a purse with a briefcase.

Gentlemen can don a long-sleeved shirt and tie, slacks and leather shoes. A short hair cut and no facial hair is expected. Minimize jewelry. Cologne should never be strong. Make sure your grooming is impeccable. Finally check your attire in the restroom just before your interview for a final assessment of your appearance.
