Its not we need new ideas, but we need to stop having old ideas

HISTORY
The technology truly began during the 1990's in countries like Germany, Korea, and Japan where they discovered LED's could be retrofitted to send information. Harald Haas continues to wow the world with the potential to use light for communication.

Abstract
Data through illumination A solution given by Harald Haas Sending data through an LED light bulb Same idea behind IR remote controls but more powerful. Can produce data rates faster than 10 megabits per seconds
Forget Wi-Fi, It's Li-Fi: Internet Through Light bulb

WHAT IS LI FI ?
Li-fi is transferring of data without using RW. A type of VLC (Visible Light Communication). Wireless replacing optical wireless. Taking fiber out of fiber optics.

Introduction
Li-Fi means Light Fidelity. At the heart of this technology is a new generation of high brightness lightemitting diodes. It is possible to encode data in the light by varying the rate at which the LEDs flicker on and off to give different strings of 1s and 0s. .

Li-Fi Technology
When the lighting networks become wireless communication networks. Ten times higher data rates compared to Wi-Fi. Worldwide Economic and Green Impact.

ISSUES WITH R-WAVES

Capacity Efficiency Availability Security

Capacity
The current system makes use of radio waves. With the increasing number of mobile connections the availability of the spectrum is getting congested. Radio waves forms only a small fraction of the entire EM spectrum thus making the problem even worse.

Efficiency
The current system is high on energy consumption. For every unit of energy consumed the data transmitted is relatively less. The data speeds in the current system can only reach up to a few hundreds of megabits per second.

Availability
The availability of the radio waves is yet another major issue now a days. These waves are not much available during the flight travel. It is not advisable to use these devices at public places.

Security
These radio waves can easily penetrate through the walls, thus letting anonymous users to use the network. This can pose threat if the people with bad intentions start using it.

Economic
Due the limited availability of the radio waves the tariff rates are relatively costlier. There can be many transparency issues during the spectrum allocations paving way for many scams like in the case of 2G. Key numbers of Led market
14 billion of new lamps each years. 25 billion Euros of turnover in 2011. 25% of CAGR only for the EU Led market

What if RW replaced by Light

Availability:
Light is readily available in every part of the world. This makes it easy for people in airplanes to work on the internet. There are an estimated 14 billion light sources on earth and each can be easily converted into a LI FI hotspot.

Security
Unlike radio waves light waves cannot penetrate through opaque objects thus providing plenty of network privacy. No other person can share a network unless the owner has permitted them to use it. The sources can be used as normal lights when there is no use for a hotspot.

Worldwide Economic and Green Impact

Thanks to the Li-Fi technology, the 14 billion lamps in the world will become gradually green mobile internet masts that will permit to respond to the impressive increasing demand of mobile connectivity. Also, this will allow reducing the electromagnetic pollution generated by the numerous radio wave solutions developed until now.

In an economic world where Innovation is a strategic tool for the competiveness of the companies, the training of engineers and project managers on new technologies becomes a must to have parameter.

Economic value
A free band that does not need license. High installation cost but very low maintenance cost. Cheaper than Wi-Fi. Theoretical speed up to 1 GB per second : Less time & energy consumption. No more monthly broadband bills. Lower electricity costs. Longevity of LED bulb : saves money. Light doesn't penetrate through walls : secured access.

Li-Fi vs. Wi-Fi

VLC is not in competition with WiFi, it is a complimentary technology that should eventually help free up much needed space within the radio wave spectrum. You can't have a light bulb that provides data to a high-speed moving object or to provide data in a remote area where there are trees and walls and obstacles behind.

APPLICATIONS
Traffic Lights Safe Environments Public Internet Hotspots In Hospitals (OT) On Ocean Beds In Aeroplanes In Navigation

Traffic Lights
Can communicate to the car and with each other. Cars have LED-based headlights, LED-based cack lights, and cars can communicate with each other and prevent accidents in by exchanging information.

Safe Environments
VL is more safe than RF. Can be used in places where RF can't be used such as petrochemical plants , airplanes etc.

Public Internet Hotspots

Millions of street lamps deployed around the world. Each of these street lamps could be a free access point.

ON OCEAN BEDS
Can even wok underwater were Wi-Fi fails completely. Have endless opportunities for military/navigation operations.

The Future is very bright

In the next decade this technology can be made available everywhere. Places where optical fibers are difficult to reach can be reached using this technology. Every light source on earth can be a hotspot making technology very much available to every person on earth. Traffic signals vehicles and many other devices can communicate each other making the world an easy place to live. Thousands of chemical plants can transmit data without fear as light waves are not hazardous to them.

CONCLUSION
The possibilities are numerous and can be explored further. If his technology can be put into practical use, every bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspot to transmit wireless data and we will proceed toward the cleaner, greener, safer and brighter future..
