The Pronouncement
Matthew 3:1-2 Now in those days John the
Baptist *came, preaching in the wilderness of
Judea, saying, (2) "Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand."

Mark 1:14-15 Now after John had been taken into

custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the
gospel of God, (15) and saying, "The time is
fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent
and believe in the gospel."

Mat 24:14 "This gospel of the kingdom shall be

preached in the whole world as a testimony to all
the nations, and then the end will come.
Kingdom of God or Kingdom of Heaven
Two views (maybe more)
1. Two different Gospels (dispensational view)
•Gospel of the kingdom
•Gospel of grace
2. One Gospel
•Eternal Gospel
Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having
an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every
nation and tribe and tongue and people;
•Paul Preached both as the same
Acts 20:24-25 "But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to
myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I
received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the
grace of God. (25) "And now, behold, I know that all of you, among
whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face.
•Risky preaching a different Gospel than Paul's
Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you
a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be
accursed!
One or Two Kingdoms?

Jewish Tradition - Do not speak God’s name and do not write it
often in fear of using God’s name in vain. Wrote G-D

Evidence in favor of Matthew being written to Jews

Mat 15:2 "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of

Mark’s readers needed the traditions explained
Mar 7:1-5 The Pharisees and some of the scribes
gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, (2)
and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread
with impure hands, that is, unwashed. (3) (For the Pharisees
and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their
hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders; (4) and

Additional evidence in the text

Mat 19:23-24 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is
hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. (24) "Again I say to you, it
is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to
enter the kingdom of God.“
Again I say…. He is repeating the same message using Kingdom of
God and Kingdom of heaven.

Two parallel verses between Matthew and Luke

Mat 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Luke 6:20 And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say,
"Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they

Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers,

King of the Jews?" (34) Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on
your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?" (35) Pilate
answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief
priests delivered You to me; what have You done?" (36) Jesus
answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were
of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would
not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not
of this realm." (37) Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a
king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For
this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to
testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My

Act 17:1-10 Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and
Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of
the Jews. (2) And according to Paul's custom, he went to them, and for
three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, (3) explaining
and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the
dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the
Christ." (4) And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and
Silas, along with a large number of the God-fearing Greeks and a
number of the leading women. (5) But the Jews, becoming jealous and
taking along some wicked men from the market place, formed a mob
and set the city in an uproar; and attacking the house of Jason, they
were seeking to bring them out to the people. (6) When they did not
find them, they began dragging Jason and some brethren before the city
authorities, shouting, "These men who have upset the world have come
here also; (7) and Jason has welcomed them, and they all act contrary
to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus." (8)
They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these
things. (9) And when they had received a pledge from Jason and the
others, they released them. (10) The brethren immediately sent Paul
and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into

•Right after feeding the multitude

Ambassadors for the Kingdom

2Corinthians 5:20 Therefore, we are

ambassadors for Christ, as though God were
making an appeal through us; we beg you on
behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
God makes his appeal through us
Eph 6:18-20 With all prayer and petition pray at
all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be
on the alert with all perseverance and petition
for all the saints, (19) and pray on my behalf,
that utterance may be given to me in the
opening of my mouth, to make known with
boldness the mystery of the gospel, (20) for
which I am an ambassador in chains; that in
proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to
At War?
The Kingdom of God is at war
•We are covertly at war
•Spies out in the field
•Who are we warring against?
Eph 6:10-17 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His
might. (11) Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to
stand firm against the schemes of the devil. (12) For our struggle is not
against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers,
against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of
wickedness in the heavenly places. (13) Therefore, take up the full
armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and
having done everything, to stand firm. (14) Stand firm therefore,
HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE
BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, (15) and having shod YOUR FEET
WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; (16) in addition to
all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish
all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (17) And take THE HELMET OF
SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Our enemy is Satan, not the nations of the

world. Not politics
David The type and Shadow
David was a type and a shadow

David’s anointing and rejection

•David was anointed king and indwelled by the Holy Spirit
•The Holy Spirit left Saul
•Who was God’s king?
•Who was the people’s King?
•David, God’s anointed did not try to assert his kingdom over Saul’s
•The older king, Saul persecuted God’s anointed king David (God’s
choice was rejected by Saul and Israel as they continued to serve
Saul.)
•David fled
•David was joined by 400 men as he fled from Saul
•Later, another 600 joined God’s anointed
•These men served him as their king
•These men became his administration when he did become King
over all of Israel
David The type and Shadow(Cont)
Jesus’ Anointing and Rejection
•Holy spirit came down like a dove
•Since that time, the kings and kingdoms of this world do
not embrace Him as king
•Nations and peoples do not acknowledge Him as God’s
appointed ruler over all the earth
•The day will come, just like it did for David, when He will
be recognized at the King

Romans 14:11 For it is written, "AS I LIVE, SAYS

THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME,
AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE PRAISE TO
GOD."
David The type and Shadow(Cont)
Now and for the last 2000 years
we’re like David and his men.

•Follow an invisible King

•Adhere to a invisible Kingdom

•And we are taking the heat for

standing up against a visible
system

Kingdom now and in the future

•Jesus established the Kingdom 2000 years

ago
•It will continue forever into the future
•It will continue to grow and at some point,
the olive tree, or mustard tree, or leaven will
cover the whole earth
•As believers, we are in the Kingdom –
Colossians 1:13-14 For He rescued us from
the domain of darkness, and transferred us
to the kingdom of His beloved Son, (14) in
whom we have redemption, the forgiveness
of sins.
Good News - Righteousness,
Peace, Joy

joy
Rom 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and
drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy
Spirit.

•Peace - nations formerly hostile to one another will
come into the Kingdom of God and will no longer need
weapons or armies
Micah 4:2-3 Many nations will come and say, "Come
and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD And to the
house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about
His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For from
Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the LORD
from Jerusalem. (3) And He will judge between many
peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations.
Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares

Peace
John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you,
so that in Me you may have peace. In the
world you have tribulation, but take courage; I
have overcome the world."
Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in
everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known
to God. (7) And the peace of God, which
surpasses all comprehension, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The world must have parties and toys to enjoy
life and live in peace.
We only need to trust in Jesus
Good News - Righteousness, Peace, Joy

•Peace and joy are spiritual
•They are fruit of the spirit
•Our victories are not not political, not
moral victories in government and
judiciaries
As the Kingdom continues to come in, it
will not be with armies and wars.
•Seeds fall on good ground and
produce fruit
•The wheat is being sown and will
reap a harvest
The Gospel is an Invitation with an
Ultimatum
It’s really an ultimatum
Act 17:30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is
now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,
Mat 22:1-14 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying, (2) "The
kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding
feast for his son. (3) "And he sent out his slaves to call those who had
been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come. (4)
"Again he sent out other slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been
invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened
livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the
wedding feast."' (5) "But they paid no attention and went their way,
one to his own farm, another to his business, (6) and the rest seized his
slaves and mistreated them and killed them. (7) "But the king was
enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set
their city on fire. (8) "Then he *said to his slaves, 'The wedding is
ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. (9) 'Go therefore to
the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding
feast.' (10) "Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered
together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was
filled with dinner guests. (11) "But when the king came in to look over
the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding
clothes, (12) and he *said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here
without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless. (13) "Then the
Likening Jesus To David
People loved David, even Saul for a time
•Played harp when demons tormented Saul
•Saul loved David
•Saul felt David was the threat to his throne
•Saul didn’t love him anymore and hurled javelins at
David

There are people all over the world who

have good things to say about Jesus
•As long as Jesus calms their fears, makes them feel safe
and provides them comfort, they love him.
•Like Saul, as soon as these people see Jesus in
competition for their throne, they too hurl javelins at
Jesus.
Likening Jesus To David
The love of Jonathan for David
•Jonathan had as much to lose to David as Saul
did. The throne
•Jonathan’s love for David resulted in him offering
David the kingdom
•Jonathan gave David his armor, his ring, his sword
saying that he knew the lord had chosen David to
the King
•When David fled, Jonathan didn’t go with him. He
returned to Saul. He didn’t choose to go with
God’s anointed king.
•Jonathan loved David, but not enough to put his
life on the line and go with him.
Mat 16:25 "For whoever wishes to save his life will
lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will
find it.

The governments we live under are not good.
There is a much better kingdom available
Our King has never treated His own badly
You have a cross to bear
You must be willing to give your life for the King
as David’s men did
It’s a relationship, shepherd sheep, king
subjects, lord servant
He is a good King, a good Shepherd, and a good
Lord

can’t be your savior unless he is
your lord.
